Approaching EGCC

To learn something…
Last night on Vatsim I approached Manchester 23R.
Only TWR and GND were online.
With Simbrief and Navigraph (NG) my appr was. Elvo1M, ending on Dayne (fl80) So far, so good.
Without ATC you are supposed to follow the charts.
The only approach charts I can find in NG for 23R are 11-3, 11-3A and 13-4, all with a procedure turn.
So I did that properly, including communication (text and voice!) on unicom (122.8). The plan was to contact the TWR upon interception of the ILS. Twr, however, rather brutally informed me that, without communication, I did not follow the correct procedure and thereby disrupted other traffic. I was expected to fly a straight in landing. (Dayne to D12.3 MCT? )
Who can tell me what the correct procedure was, without ATC and where can I read that?
Is a procedure turn not required if there is no ATC?

Thanks for the responses.

Unlike EGLL and EGKK , Manchester doesn’t have a “without radar control” chart, so it’s a matter of self vectoring from Dayne in order to est on the LOC at approx 12miles.
Heading from Dayne is approx 020-030degs for the downwind leg then a base leg hdg approx 320degs followed by the intercept turn. After Dayne descend down to 4000ft on the QNH for rwy 23R.
The major airfields within the UK do not use procedural turns as they are just too busy.
The only place I can think this may be written is on the Vatsim UK website.
Hope this helps
EX UK Vatsim Controller

THANX A LOT, BAW526! That solves a lot!
Unfortunately I cant find anything on this on Vatsim UK or AIP. Strange, i would think that such important information should be easy to find. Everyone can figure out his own route from Dayne or other end of STAR to IAF themselves. I will fly your advised route with pleasure! Is very logical! But I cant hardly think that’s the intention. Or is this a written standard that everybody knows, that i missed, the past 10 years :flushed:
I also don`t understand why all the EGCC approachcharts then prominently features a procedure turn, via MCT. How was I supposed to know NOT to fly that route?
Is there an explaination for?

Regards!

Ultimately on VATSIM without ATC you can fly what you like, just announce your intentions on UNICOM. Within the EGCC vMATS Pt2 you will find diagrams of the RMA that controllers use (areas and alts that they can vector you around in).
Whether people remember previous vectoring when ATC has been online and just follow that, as its generally the most expeditious way to the airfield and fits in with any other traffic around, who knows, but there’s nothing stopping you from flying the procedural turn just rememeber you would be heading directly toward traffic at 3500ft that have self vectored from the holding point. (poss hold at MCT until the area is clear of other traffic?).
In the RW you wont find any aircraft complete a procedural turn approach at EGCC as ATC is always available and will vector aircraft as required from the end of the star.

i came here to find this answer! i too was confused as to why we dont use the charts! ???
