Are you an ATC guru? Help!

I am using a Xbox series S. I am a new simmer and want to know if we can talk directly to ATC in the game. If using a headset, does the game recognize verbal commands? Or do we just need to turn AI off, and manually make selections using the keyboard?

Hi @PRVTJT
Welcome to the flight sim world!
Unfortunately The current in-sim ATC does not respond to verbal commands so you will need to select the options given in the ATC box.

I wonder if there’s any plan to implement a voice response. I mean, I don’t think they need to additional coding. Or at least not that much.

We don’t need MSFS to have its own speech recognition function. We should be able to use the Microsoft Azure Speech to Text recognition software. Or even the default Windows Speech Recognition function that every Windows already have. I do hope that Xbox has this function, otherwise I don’t see a reason why they won’t include it, since it’s coming from the same company anyway.

Regardless of which ones to use, it should integrate by sending MSFS the ‘text’ version of that speech and all MSFS should do is to match that text version with the available responses in the ATC engine. If it matches, the response is accepted as if you choose the same option using mouse clicks.

It won’t be perfect, of course. We all know the phonetics in the default ATC is not exactly realistic for the entire world, and that can catch people off guard using this function where people might respond the correct way, but if it doesn’t match word for word with the one in the available responses in the ATC engine, it might not pick up their response anyway. So unless the ATC responses are fixed to a more proper way, it would actually force people to say responses in the ‘wrong’ way just to get the ATC to accept the response.

But I don’t think this is a huge effort to do for developers, seeing is just about integrating the system with an already existing system outside of the simulator. And they don’t need to build this new engine from scratch just for the sim.

I agree. It would be amazing if we could talk directly to the Sim to provide our ATC responses. This would really be great practice!
