At the end of my tether with the stutters

Hi all. I have a PC with 64GB DDR4, 3070ti and an i7 12700. Run MSFS on 1440p mostly high settings. All fine until a few days ago. Now I can see that GPU usage is all over the place, and will drop to 0% or a low percentage, and the game will stutter massively. Dropping from 45fps to about 11. It does this often at airports, until after takeoff, then not a lot at all in the other phases, until I get close to my destination, or fly over a large city etc, then it repeats this. It was not doing this before. I have not changed a single thing on my PC, nor on MSFS. Not one single thing. This game, and the way performance can inexplicably change, is infuriating. None of my other software does this. Including other flight sims.

I’m sorry you are having these nasty stutters.
Here is my quick list of things to try hoping you might solve them:

  • Delete MSFS rolling cache.
  • Exit MSFS.
  • Delete NVIDIA Shader chache files (google to find where they are located)
  • Launch MSFS.
  • Rebuild the Rolling Cache.
  • Test.

One very common cause for stutters are junk things cached in either the Rolling cache or the NVIDIA shader cache. So this will solve it if that is the case.

Check your TOD and LOD values in the graphics settings, these can also cause problems when you are at airports.

Thanks. So when you refer to TOD and LOD, what should they be? I do have them relatively high, around 150 each.

Done everything else you mentioned. Other than restarting the rolling cache (I deleted it and then turned it off).

Finding a sweet spot in TOD, LOD and many other variables varies from machine to machine.
It would be nice if there was a reference/benchmark/tuning app which could determine what the best settings are for exactly an individual machine.
AFAIK it’s not there.
I would try to backup the content of the community folder and see what happens
Next, turn every setting back to medium or even low.
Look carefuly at the results and if the stutters are gone, adjust your settings step by step.
It will take lots of time consuming restarts but only you can determine if the results fit your desire.
Only after you have found an acceptable situation, you can re-introduce items into the community folder.
Again, this will require many restarts and testing.
At first glance, you’re system looks to be sufficient to run the sim fluently as long as you take for granted that it has it’s limitations.
Good luck on your journey towards simulator hapiness.
Happy :small_airplane:

As terrible as this is going to sit with you, sometimes a new clean install
of everything is the only resolution.

I’m only saying this because I had a D: drive get messed up somehow
and I tried everything to no avail.

Finally formatted it and did a clean install of FS2020 onto it to
get FS2020 working again.

To be honest the performance on MSFS has been only going down during the last 6 months, after the avionics updates were deployed. I never saw the game performing so bad as it currently does nor any other recent game performing so bad in general as MSFS does nowadays. Main thread can´t handle the workload, that´s it. The solution to deal with it has been to reduce graphical quality and now we have stupid situations like objects and terrain LOD changes that result in big objects appearing at 100m in front of you, small objects not being visible, buildings height bumping as terrain below them morphs due to those LOD changes and even AI traffic being invisible at short distance (only nav lights are visible).

To make things even worse MS released some major Windows 11 updates by the end of last year that basically destroyed the P-Cores performance on latest generations CPUs and the server connection is always below par. As a result of that game freezes like crazy randomly and worldwide, no matter the scenery or aircraft you are using, with freezes lasting up to 10 seconds.

That´s the status quo. There´s nothing you can do locally to prevent it. In particular don´t waste time with clean installs. They won´t solve the problem as the problem is not caused by game´s content.

Cheers

LuisArgerich: Could you be more specific on your term “Junk”? I have a 5 GB RC, and see (in Resource Monitor) data being streamed into it & being read out of it pretty much all the time when flying. So far, I’m fortunate in not having stutters, except very short ones when the disk queue length on my HDD exceeds 5 (disk activity at this time is >95%, usually 100%).

I’d like to better understand what’s going on in the RC so as to avoid the “Junk” piling up in the cache, if you happen to know this. Thanks!

I have to agree, unpleasant as reinstaling is. I did the same a few months ago, and reinstalling everything completely fixed all my problems, and my system has never run so smoothly. Short of completely razing your system, another thing you may try is to revisit your community folder. Remove everything and then just gradually re-add as you need to. You may find that one or more add-ons is affecting performance.

See the recent developer video.

The memory allocation in MSFS is much slower than Asobo realised and can cause stutters.
They have rewritten the mem allocation code to be 100 to 200 times faster. SU15 and 2024 will have the fix.

There is also a fix to speed up instrument drawing, which causes problems on airliners with a lot of instruments.

Ultra settings on long flights will trigger the problem. So reduce detail at the moment and wait for SU15 final release in March.

i have the fix and i worked for me
go to your network settings and set it from private to public and that will fix all the stutter

Not a tuning app, per se. But I’ve recommended this video before and folks who’ve tried it seem to think it’s pretty valuable for balancing CPU/GPU performance with graphical fidelity.

Obviously there are other factors at play, but getting your system balanced is a good start.

I did this just now this post suggested , men cuz everything was fine , I even updated the graphic card custom version from FS… , and then started with that sickness of stuttering
I7 k with 4070 super

Why not let NVIDIA force experience suggest the settings for you. It knows your card it knows the game. Don’t fight it just let it do it’s stuff and see how you get on.

Best thing I ever did :+1:

One cause i just identified is when you disconnect in windows monitors/screens.
I was and still am using 2 24 inches touch screen monitors for instruments. i disconnected them from windows because i intented to use VR pimax crystal and it says you only need one screen connected on top of VR headset. Turns out it was causing massive stutters even on mains screen (although there they could go unoticed). toome an hour going crazy to think about this and identity the cause so hopefuly my struggle and this message help some of you guys. Turns out i can still use the pimax VR headset with my 3 other screens connected but the 2 24 inches are connected via USB C to hdmi adapters (and used only to display intruments) so i guess you can only have the VR headset and one screen on the GPU the pimax is connected to.

Have you ever found the solution? I have similar specs and also tried various solutions.
