True, but I know here he is, and the Mag Var there is about -14 deg !!!
The True/mag error is not as bad as the wind Speed error, where the given speed in ft/se is about 1.7 times that of the sped in knots , so winds are being reported significantly FASTER than they really are.
Well, SO WHAT – well, in effect, it is DUMMING down the winds, by a factor of 1.7, to make the winds less and easier to fly in !!!
And is just Plain WRONG, a coding error that should be easily fixed,
If you are doing any serious flight planning in smaller GA planes, this makes a significant difference.
If you are just “flying around” looking at scenery, and buzzing others, then maybe “who cares”
It would seem that ALL the Wind speed and Direction “Tokens” in the US langauge file, are using TRUE & Ft/sec, so any INFORMATION given to the pilot by AUDIO or TEXT is wrong.
The only correct information,m is that got for Instruments via SimConnects, where the correct units are selected.
ie users cannot correct this themselves by editing the Langauge File with a MOD.
15W to 16W actually (1985 is about the last time the FAA updated the Magvar at a lot of the airports I fly to).
I didn’t mean to imply I knew their sources, the airports in question were KASH, KMHT and KACK, which all have local ASOS/AWOS to rely on… I was comparing the ATIS reports with the METARs as I was flying from KASH to KACK on a relatively gusty day. Winds were supposed to get to 20 knots gusting to 28 at times on Nantucket… Not impossible if down the runway, but, 15 degrees matters at those speeds for me in the Warrior I was going to rent. I went and all was good, but there was some trepidation given the direction matched the METAR from the ATIS and they were forecast to shift some.
