When using B737/A310 I have observed the following behaviour after take-off. ATC communications (AI radio communications (ATC) is enabled) seem to be normal until squawk is not verified and transponder is not reset as requested.
As a result ATC cancels the IFR flight plan and radar services are terminated. I need to continue the flight in VFR mode.
Check that transponder is set to any of the working modes. AI sometimes fails to switch it and leaves it in STBY, so ATC does not copy your squawk. Transponder is usually at the pedestal in airliners. See example for A310 case, where you should set it to TA or TA/RA. That allows to identify other traffic or to identify it and resolve proximity conflicts as well. This step is named TCAS in the A310 line up checklist and shall be set to TA/RA. Any of the working modes (with or without TCAS) will allow ATC to see you so it won´t cancel IFR.
I do the initial ATC requests myself. Set everything as needed, then when you are at the hold line and after takeoff clearance is given, turn on ai radio comms.

Many thanks geloxo and ccrbc! It was indeed switched to STBY and I set it to TA/RA mode. It did not help though. Am I also expected to set squawk as requested by ATC e.g. 6745 (still in AI mode)? Will try to switch on ai radio comms after takeoff clearance is given as a next step.
Thanks Hester for moving me post to the respective subcategory!
Generally the closer to study level a plane is the more likely you’ll need to manually set the squawk code rather than the sim ATC response doing it automatically. I suspect most study level sim users prefer it that way, I know I do.
Thank you RagingWombat839! I have manually set the squawk code (4436 in my last attempt) and ATC keeps asking me to verify the code. I am wondering what else to do other than set to XPDR and manually change code. Anything else I need to do?
I’m in the A320 at the moment and have not been flying the A310 much recently. In the A320 you turn the transponder on and turn tcas on, both are rotary switches on the transponder unit. Check to see if there are 2 switches you need to set. Also double check the squawk code is correct. Once it’s all working the ATC will automatically acknowledge radar contact. Except for entering the code wrong or missing a switch I’ve never had it fail to register.
Thanks RagingWombat! The transponder on the A310 is different and has one switch only. I checked the A320 and the squawk is set automatically as per ATC instruction. In the end it works like ccrbc recommended only.
