This has only happened a few times, but I find it curious and was just wondering if anyone else has encountered it. I’m flying along in my Longitude on an IFR flight plan from point A to point B, often in the middle of my initial descent. Things are going just fine. Then, out of the blue (pun intended), ATC chimes in with “N343WB, IFR plan is cancelled, radar service terminated.” And I’m thinking, “wait, what?” Initially, I wondered if it might have something to do with the fact that I had AI handle the comms, so I turned that off, and it still cancelled IFR. In one instance, ATC cancelled my IFR flight plan, and I was still at 20,000 feet. Call me crazy but I don’t think we do VFR at 20,000 feet. It’s not the end of the world, I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on it.
I think ATC only cancels your IFR if you don’t follow their orders 3 times in a row or so? (which is an alternative to creating a feature to send the fighter jets to check up on you ^^ )
At least that’s how it has been in all previous Microsoft sims, and so far the only time ATC would cancel my IFR. (unless you specifically request it)
This. It’s never happened to me in normal circumstances.
OP, don’t ■■■■ the ATC off because they take it seriously.
Atc can also cancel your IFR prematurely if you are landing at an airport with no tower and they’ve given you the “final” descent clearance. Just another possibility and something I’ve noticed.
They also frown on off transponders and will dump you for not having it on after a few warnings.
There’s a few things that can caused the ATC to cancel IFR:
-
Your transponder is malfunctions, if you spawn into the flight mid-air, or on the runway, sometimes you never go through the entire IFR clearance process which makes your transponder to use the default squawk code. The longer you’re transmitting this incorrect default code, the more the ATC would get upset, and until you correct it, the ATC will cancel your IFR. Best solution is, either you start your whole flight from cold and dark, or that you’re standing by your transponder to reset into the assigned squawk code as soon as you get the message.

You fail to respond to the ATC instructions a few times in a row. Sometimes you missed it, sometimes the game bugged that you can’t really respond to anything. Either way, without responding, they would eventually cancel your IFR.
Actually, keeping the AI Copilot to handle ATC on is actually helping you to prevent the IFR from being cancelled since they will keep responding to the ATC calls. So if you get cancelled while having the AI handling it, chances are it’s the first cause.
One situation I have found where they won’t cancel your IFR flight is not getting to a requested altitude, either ascending or descending.
Whenever ATC cancels my IFR flight plan, I file my IFR flight plan while in-flight. ATC gives me clearance and a new squeak code.
