For example, there are airport approaches where the initial fix has to be over the airport - these are usually places where it’s geographically constrained (i.e., rising terrain all around) and the FMS needs a good position fix to start the turns into the remaining legs.
No just flat country over standard airports… idk if I am knowledgeable enough to say much more… I get handed off to approach make co tact with them and they never give me clearance to get any further on the flight whether that’s approach clearance or landing clearance I’m not sure but they’ll have me at like 3000 feet and fly me over the airport and if I request vector to the next way point it just keeps giving me the same one I’m already on… sorry if this isn’t detailed enough or it’s somehow my error.
I also experienced that a few times, and maybe have one case still written down somewhere, including airports and waypoints. I can remember one other case where the IAF was directly on top of the airport, but ATC only cleared me to that IAF and never gave me further instructions even after reaching it. I know that I should fly a hold there until I get clearance, but until then I always got clearance in time because in career there just is no other traffic… So I just flew the complete approach procedure to the ILS glideslope and descended for landing (including warnings from ATC for being below my assigned altitude) , when just 1nm from the threshold I suddenly got transferred to tower, which gave me approach clearance just as I was about to touch down. So it seems the trigger event for transfer to tower is somewhat bugged, but my last flights all had only VFR approaches so I couldn’t test that any further.
I had exactly the same issue on at least five A320neo (v2 from iniBuilds) IFR flights from EDDW to LKPR. I only got the IAF clearance, but received no further instructons from the ATC while I’ve been remaining in a hold pattern ERASU. When I got the low fuel warning I exited the hold pattern and continued the approach without clearance, but a few miles from the runway the whole MSFS 2024 got stuck. This happened at least five times. Maybe the ATC behaviour is related to the freeze issue.
I noticed that when atc gives you approach details it then immediately after proceeds to approach clearance, which means that I was never able to acknowledge the details. This breaks stuff in a way that after flying the approach and being on g/s I can’t even contact tower - setting up the radio properly and I the only option in atc menu is to contact area atc. For me the only option is to cancel ifr and fly an ils approach anyway…
I wish the sim would provide much more Training on the ifr procedures and just aviation procedures in general and what all the waypoints and clearances actually mean cuz a lot of the stuff you guys are bringing up I had done in the sim but never realized what it was called or what the proper procedures for them are… like initial approach clearance vs final approach and the ILS glideslope and a few other things that I didn’t know the names or what I should be expecting from them but make sense to me now that you guys bring them up because I had been doing them in 2020 and 2024 but never knew the details. I know a lot of the fun of this is figuring things out for yourself and not just being spoon fed everything but it would have been nice to know how to properly follow the procedures they are putting in place for you… Thanks for all your responses.
Just an update I think I have this figured out and it was my mistake all along… just landed ILS with no problems in MKE… I think I just didnt understand the details of flying IFR and what the different waypoints meant I should do where I should hold and when I have to hold etc… and looking at the flight plan in the efb was confusing to me at first but I think I got it now… I’m not saying there isn’t any problems with ifr flight I have seen plenty of posts about it but this one was me… like I said more training please…
I flew the “gold” mission for VIP transport in Career and had an issue where I needed to start my descent because the fix I was headed to required being below 16 000 feet. While I’m headed there from the previous fix, ATC gave me an instruction to “climb and maintain 20 000 feet.” It also didn’t hand me off to the tower or approach controller for my destination. No way that would happen in real life.
Here’s what worked:
Cancel IFR with the center you are talking to.
Use the ATC menu to “find nearest airport” until you locate the tower of the one you need.
Scroll down to the option “Retry with original IFR plan” (might be off on the name), and click it
Chances are the tower will accept your original IFR clearance and they will take over giving you instructions.
Once cleared, fly the approach as normal.
This is my flight path as I had to cancel NAV mode, find a way to get cleared on my original IFR plan, then get back on course to land at Nice, FR. You can see I come off the course right at what was supposed to be TOD because that’s right when center ATC assigned me a big climb and I was confused. Haha.
