ATIS: annoying issue when same frequency as ATC

I know there are some other posts on this topic. The issue is that some ATIS frequencies are the same as the ATC frequency used for communication. When this happens, the ATIS just repeats over and over and dominates the frequency preventing any proper ATC communication from occurring. It’s very annoying; you’re unable to transmit at all; your IFR flight plan will eventually be cancelled because of an inability to respond to ATC.

I have noticed this in a couple locations:

  • Some unicoms 122.8 also act as an ATIS
  • Near KSDF (Louisville, KY, USA) there is an ATIS that uses the ARTCC (Center) frequency.
  • And in the San Juan Center, there also an ATIS that uses the same frequency.

My suggestion for fixing this is to create a pause between the repeating ATIS messages. Maybe 15 seconds so that ATC comms can occur and there’s a chance to respond.
Any other ideas?

I’m experiencing this right now. A long flight is about t o be trashed because of this bug that was first reported months ago.

Well I’ll be, it just stopped by itself as soon as I posted the above message!

Maybe because you flew out of range of the ATIS?

Haha, yeah, it was just really funny timing.

As seen in other posts, Rockford ATIS (KRFD) and O’Hare Approach (KORD) seem to have some overlap.
