Aussie Group Flights Team: South England - Tiger Tour

This Tiger Tour within the counties of Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Somerset is 155 nm in length and approximately 2 hr in duration (excluding coffee break).

It encompasses some of the most ancient areas of England (including Stonehenge), two of its most beautiful cities (Salisbury and Bath), three of its most popular GA airfields (Compton Abbas, Old Sarum and Popham) and some other interesting sights besides (including the notorious Cerne Abbas Giant).

We will also visit Westland Airfield, home of the eponymous aircraft company, now known as Leonardo Helicopters. There will also be the opportunity to test your skills on finding – and landing on – some small farm strips.

The route will be flown in a generally anticlockwise sense as follows:

  • Compton Abbas: Take-off.
  • Fovant Badges: WPT; regimental carvings in the chalk hills.
  • Salisbury Cathedral: At least 2 orbits of the spire approved by the Bishop.
  • Old Sarum: Touch & Go (TG) at this old airfield, requisitioned by the RFC during WW I.
  • Popham: TG. Hopefully, we will use Rwy 26, so that you can practise the well-known S-bend approach to avoid the A303 road fuel station!
  • Stonehenge: WPT; requires no introduction. English Heritage has granted us 2 orbits.
  • Coate Farm: Land, full stop (LFS). Our coffee break will be on this farm strip, which is conveniently hidden behind a hedge.
  • Caen Hill Locks: WPT; a series of 29 locks on the Kennet & Avon Canal, to the west of Devizes.
  • Bath: WPT; two orbits taking in the sights of this Georgian City.
  • Westbury White Horse: WPT; carving in the chalk hills.
  • Edington Farm: TG at this hill-top farm with a large manor house.
  • Stourhead Park: WPT; country house estate with large gardens, lake, etc. Popular with tourists.
  • Westland Airfield: TG.
  • Cerne Abbas Giant: WPT; no further comment.
  • Compton Abbas: Full Stop Landing.

Details to follow. Hope you can join us.
