I would appreciate some guidance on the best way to descend via autopilot in the A320nx, as I am finding it difficult to get the mod to descend quickly once I am at 10,000 feet and the mandatory speed of 250 knots. Using both the managed descent mode and the specific mode, the autopilot typically slows the decent rate down after a few moments, such that I risk missing getting low enough to pick up the localizer or RNAV slope. Repeatedly, I have had to fly the plane down manually, often with treacherous results. I have tried activating the spoilers – it helps but tends to destabilize the mod. What am I doing wrong?
Use Selected speed mode and then select a vertical speed that will get you faster to your assigned FL. Find the right VS to keep the speed below 250 kts.
Use the speed break for up to 50% to also keep the speed under control. I had no problems using them whenever they were needed.
Try to use the A32NX Custom FBW version instead. If you use the latest installer, it’s the third option. They changed the aircraft fly-by-wire system behaviours, making it fly much stable and more predictable.
I still need to use the spoilers but only for descending below 10,000 ft. Just follow the ATC instructions. Once you hit 10,000 ft and the aircraft slows down to 250 knots. Deploy full spoilers. (I know that in the air, the spoilers only deploy 50%, but that’s not what I’m seeing from the speed brake lever inside the cockpit. I can deploy full in the lever. It’s probably translated to 50% in the speedbrakes itself)
Then when you reach the decel point, keep the speedbrake open as well, to slow down faster and descent faster as well. You just need a bit of practice. Eventually, you’ll get used to it and be able to descent on time.
