Autopilot for Carenado's C185f Skywagon - Beech D17 Staggerwing - Waco YMF-5

Below you’ll find three mods giving an autopilot for these planes.
As each plane have it’s own characteristics please read the .txt file included for details.
WARNING: as I don’t own MSFS2024, these mods has only been tested with 2020. For 2024 it may work or not, you can test it and let us know.

Tried it for the C185f in MSFS 2024 and it seems to work well with Simbrief! The magenta line shows as it should and functions seem to work.

Not sure how to do the following as yet:

  1. Enter the assigned altitude to climb and maintain
  2. Select HDG, NAV, VS, FLC, etc

As said, I don’t have 2024 so I can’t really help for it.
Did you tried MSFSHudBar ?

Yes, I understand you don’t have FS2024, but I like the C185f and would like an AP in it. I have both FS2020 and FS2024 installed. I will try this in both and compare, then report back, if that will help. I assume I am not understanding something rather than the AP is not compatible with FS2024. I don’t have FS Hub, but will install it if I can’t figure it out.

Thank you for your considerable work to get an AP in the C185f!!

Edit: Sorry, forgot that just because I have the C185 in FS2024 doesn’t mean I have it in FS2020, so I can’t make the comparison.

Thank you AdhocWings61!!

PLEASE CARENADO… do NOT make aircraft without A/P, at least make a hotspot to activate an A/P option… !!!

Without A/P you may only flight around the pattern… hence they are just great ALMOST unusable aircraft.

Cheers.

What do you mean? I once did an around 2 hour flight in IMC in their Piper Archer II which doesn’t have an autopilot. You can certainly fly their aircraft beyond the pattern without an autopilot without issues.

Before GPS, there was Radio Navigation. This is still widely used today, especially in GA aircraft. You aren’t restricted to flying a pattern just because there isn’t a GPS onboard.

The problem is not GPS or radio navigation.
An A/P helps to maintain your VS, altitude and track (whether GPS or radio-based).
It’s very useful for night VFR. (and to go to toilets during any flight  )

I think the distinction to be made here, both IRL and in sim, is cross-country vs. local flight. While it is certainly possible to fly cross-country without a wing leveler or 2-axis autopilot, IRL such equipment is a real boon to flight safety and navigation, especially when flying single-pilot. In sim, A/P provides for more time and attention to enjoying scenery on a cross-country flight.

Hey, I like autopilots with GPS, too. If I had my own plane IRL, I would put one in if it didn’t have it. But without it, one is not restricted to pattern work. That is my point.

I also like to have an AP in flight sim planes!

Agree! 100%

I’m pleased to report that the autopilot mod works in the Staggerwing in 2024. Thanks for taking this on, @AdhocWings61, it’s nice to have that one back in regular rotation.

And I’m pleased (and surprised) to know the Staggerwing A/P works with 2024.
Thanks for your report.
Now can anyone test with the Waco YMF-5 ?

Surely, BUT requires an attention and devotion that I’m not willing to spend on the simulator. I usually do the take-off and climb out until certain altitude, depending on the situation and then just engage the A/P and monitor the flight while I do something else on the PC… Program the descent, plan the TOD, and usually take control at the IAF… fo manually complete the aproach and landing. Thus… I consider an A/P almost mandatory on my cockpit. Cheers.

Not talking about GPS, but the lacking of an A/P.

That’s understandable.

Except for the NX Cub in MSFS 2024. Apparently you’re only supposed to fly the pattern in that one!
