FS: Settings (few options ULTRA like clounds, other HIGH, some things are LOW or OFF)
Aircraft: FBW Airbus A320
I can see that CPU is bottleneck here, and I get 30-40 FPS which might sound fine but sometimes FPS latency goes up and I can feel stuttering. (Sometimes it goes above 40, but also sometimes drops 15-25 especially if there’s a lot of traffic around me – Vatsim).
Naturally we will always blame GPU, but for me it’s not the case. When I check in task manager, I can see that my CPU0 is stuck on 100% and GPU is fairly good.
(using DX11 will make GPU work on 70% – but HEY, I tried DX12 and now my GPU is sleeping on 3-4% while doing job perfectly)
OK, so I decided to upgrade, and what I saw that the best option for my AM4 socket is 5800X3D.
So, I know it will be better, but what to expect? Some average FPS?
Did anyone had a chance to try GTX 1080 TI + 5800X3D + 1440p (let’s say full ULTRA)?
If you have other variations like 5800X, 5900X, 5950X, it can help.
I would suspect by switching to the 5800X3D your GPU will become the bottleneck.
MSFS is not efficient at utilizing multi cores which results in you seeing / being main thread limited. The 5800X3D has a few more cores and threads then your 3600, but has 96MB L3 Cache (3 times as much as your 3600) which MSFS likes.
So is it a major step up? Absolutely, but that 1080ti will become your bottleneck.
Changing TLoD and OLoD to 100 will relieve a lot of CPU load. Drop anything Ultra to High.
The rest of that is on the third party plane optimization. I think you’ll find the experience using stock planes, even with heavy glass cockpits will be better than what you have now.
I upgraded from the 5800X to the 5800X3D and in the same scenarios (aircraft, weather, scenery) noticed an immediate (and significant) improvement in latency (16ms average dropped to 12ms.) FPS seemed to increase as well, which is odd considering the clock speed of the X3D is quite a bit lower than the X.
@skypilotYTS
I know that something has to be bottleneck. It’s wild that GPU load dropped from 70% to 3-4% just by switching DX11 to DX12, so I assume it can help as well if I get better CPU.
@CasualClick
Regarding TLOD, I know that Ultra goes to 200 by default, but that one is 100, forgot to mention.
@BegottenPoet228
I noticed that as well even on this setup. Sometimes latency goes up, sometimes down but the FPS doesn’t change, and I don’t care much about number as long as it is smooth.
Yes, DX12 certainly utilizes VRAM more efficiently.
There was an issue for quite sometime where DX12 would over commit the VRAM on lower spec GPU’s but I believe that issue was resolved (not sure if it was GPU Driver or SIM side).
I have upgraded to 5800X3D and things are not as expected. We said that my GPU will be bottleneck but seems like I’m still seeing “main thread limited”. I can see that some people have this issue.
So what can go wrong?
Everything is the same, only CPU is changed. Even system is still the same.
I don’t see some increase in FPS but it goes smoothly. Even having a lot of traffic is fine. Before it would cut FPS in half. I guess GPU play role in not having more FPS but overall no stutter. Didn’t have much time to play SIM these days, but will test it.
