Bad resolution of scenery (and a headset problem)

It’s been a while since I started to notice that the resolution of the scenery (terrain, buildings etc) isn’t as good as it has been before. It seems to have nothing to do with fps and/or various VR settings inside the sim. And when I fly in 2D everything is fine (in the same area!) so obviously the data stream is available.
Another strange thing: I can’t switch back to 2D anymore without a sim crash (in most of the situations). My headset is a quest (1), which isn’t updated anymore by meta but should continue to work nevertheless.
Does anybody have an idea how to fix this?

VR will always look lower res and more blurry than 2D since it’s blown up huge. You can improve this by running higher resolutions. Maybe a setting has changed compared to before. But I wouldn’t expect too much from a Q1, that’s pretty dated!

Well, for a test I tried exactly this: pushing up resolution and suffering from bad fps. It didn’t help.
The optical blurriness of the scenery looks as if there are too few data from the cloud coming in (missing details). But because it works in 2D without problems that can’t be the reason. I suppose the data are the same in both cases, containing the ‘spatial’ information so that the computer can render 3D out of it.
And there is also the mysterious crash almost everytime I try to switch back to 2D…
(I suppose a newer headset would generate new problems because of bigger resolution, that might be too much for my machine.)

If you super sample and suffer FPS consider DLSS instead of TAA in VR sim graphics settings.

Have you checked that an update hasn’t changed your graphical settings? Unfortunately this still happens regularly, even with small updates.
I’m no VR expert but the Q1 is really a first generation however unless it is failing you shouldn’t see visual deterioration. Maybe a factory reset might help - but then again it might make it worse, try it at your own risk!

You probably know this already, but the sim uses different graphical settings for 2D and VR modes. So could it just be that the object detail is turned right down in VR, causing the sim to reduce what it shows at distance? This would not be visible if you switched back to 2D as the options change too.

Perhaps try checking your graphics options between 2D and VR modes.

Thank you for this comment, but that’s not the reason. The settings have been different in the past (to supply better fps) when the image has been ‘normal’.
But hey, surprise! Yesterday I fiddled around with the rolling cache (which I already did before without success) and now it seems to work again. I hope that it will be persistent.
The other problem (sim crash after almost every switching back to 2D) is still present. This sim is a big mystery…
BTW I checked VR in X-Plane 11 where everything was fine.

I tried this indeed. It looked horrible. Better to use (for example) TAA and 70% rendering instead of DLSS/100%, at least in my case.

(Just reviewing this post:)
I solved the crash problem by re-installing (‘repairing’) the oculus software.
