Hello MFS does not have the Bathymetry Data that XP12 will have the Bathymetry Data and it would be nice if Asobo worked on it
Submarine Simulator?
Moved to #self-service:wishlist
Hi there,
Is this an SDK request, for something like creating water masks?
Hello no so they add the ocean sea depth data
There is a boat available now in marketplace. But it is a flight simulator.
I’m not talking about a boat and all ideas are up for grabs. What is it about guys like you that bothers you so much?
Don’t worry it doesn’t bother me and I’m not trying to be awkward. I would consider though that there’s 10x more feature requests on this forum then could ever be realistically implemented in the sim in the time available and I for one would much rather Asobo focused on making the flight simulation itself as good as it can be, since that’s the primary purpose. I’m particular I’d rather they make it reliable and performant before adding more performance sapping features.
No matter where you go in the world, water is shallow, even in the middle of the Atlantic. The water depth should be different depending on where you go in the world.
How will making water deeper affect aircraft in a flight simulator?
For waterplanes water depth makes a huge difference…
In a Developer Q&A some time ago, the modeling of under water terrain was discussed and they ultimately will have this in the sim …
Acquiring the data is the main problem - we do know far less about the terrain under water as about the terrain of Mars …
It simply will not, as long as your water rudders and floats don’t touch underwater rocks and sand you’ll be safe.
Not quite true when it comes to wave behaviour in shallow water and visually more depth and underwater terrain could also be amazing.
It’s been done before in GTA and I think eventually it will come to MSFS as part of the metaverse including tides and shipping routes etc. … and before anyone complains Asobo are not the only developers partnered with Microsoft
I remember that Q&A too, where Seb addresses this topic.
Now, in some parts of the world, we have underwater terrain topography
already taken into account for modelling the appearance (reflectivity ) of the water surface.
It looks great already !
For example take off at LFCH
(Arcachon, La Teste de Buche, former residence of Asobo)
and you can experience underwater topography (ocean currents ?)
when crossing the bay of Arcachon to the north.
No longer the same boring metallic blue as before.
Even the sand of the beaches now has the color of sand.
I guess it is still experimental. (I have developer mode ON)
The direction Asobo/MS goes seems good !
bye ,walter
Hi Walter,
what you expirenced was the water masking. The ortho data also conatains some texture for shallow waters likes reefs and coasts. In this regions the developers can tell MSFS to display this texture under the water texture - this achieves a very nice effekt and the shallow waters are really interresting and nice to look at there.
But this has nothing to do with under water terrain, MSFS simply can not do that for now. MSFS does not have different water depths so far.
Hi WildTapestry269,
thanks for your reply. Very interesting !
That, partially at least, explains the tilings/seams in the water texture around Arcachon and the possibility of immediate replacement of the good and interestingly looking texture with an inferior one that moves forward along with the flight path. I have a similar behavior of the landscape texture here at Arcachon.
Any idea, why this replacement of the textures happens here ?

I think a lot has to do with conditions when satellite captured their images. While it’s easy to utilise those captured at or close to midday for shading purposes, the world’s tides work on a totally different clock and trying to fit them all together perfectly without human interaction must be an AI programmer’s worse nightmare. There are also times when resevoirs and lakes are full and rivers bursting at their seams … and there is drought.
I am not entirely sure to what you are reffering with
But if this something with squares popping in as you fly along, this effect is not only present with water masks, but can also happen over land and is most likely a bug.
I have seen some reports here on the forum talking about such issues, I for myself didn’t see them so far.
There are also suggestions that this might be down to conflicting mods.
Surely some interesting topic on the long run but I guess that’s way down the road.
Water behaviour in general first would have to be improved before thinking about underwater terrain and especially something like currents (which would be the only valid reason for underwater terrain as this would at least affect seaplanes ).
For now with Xbox X and S being the current generation of consoles I don’t think they gonna just add more stuff not related directly to flying an aircraft on top of the existing system but likely it’s something for the next gen consoles.
For the time being they could take care about the general water simulation by simulating waves with actual collisions and fixing the ship path heights so we can get ship traffic on the great lakes and on rivers.
Oh, and I don’t even start about ATC and the traffic system which have to be overhauled first - darn, I did it.
According to the twitches morphing as such is mostly down to poor quality data that will be replaced over time.
