Now that the GPU prices are dropping $300 - $800 in some cases, what would be the most logical graphics card upgrade for the money. What do you think, considering all the options on the 3050, 3060, 70, 80 and 90 series cards.
…
Assume average PC but upgradable, power supply is ample and the simmer only wants to power 2 monitors at 1080 or maybe 4K in the near future. Looking for the most power considering an average budget.
Not much help but the higher the number the more powerful. Really is that simple.
If you are only using 1080p then the 3080/90 are overkill although they leave the option open in the future and also they have more vram
Also just to add - this probably shouldn’t be in the beta section:-)
“Best” is relative.
If you’re basing it purely on performance, the 3090 and its Ti variant are kings of the heap.
If you’re scounging your pennies trying to get money together, the 3050 and 3060 lineups are the most affordable. But they’re also the entry and midrange level cards, so expect performance commensurate with their price points. They’re not bad. Just keep expectations in check.
If you want solid performance and can hack the price, the 3070/3080 variants are the sweet spot. The 3080 variants all come with more than 8GB of VRAM as well, which is a good thing and DX12 will be able to take advantage of that.
Note that even though specs say a 750W power supply should be adequate, many 3080 series users have had power issues with such and most will recommend at least an 850W PS for those cards at a minimum. If you don’t have an 850, you’ll have to factor that cost in as well. Also ensure that you have a very well ventilated fan, because you could essentially cook on those cards. They will heat up your case seriously if you don’t have adequate airflow.
Personally, I went with a 3070Ti. It was a good price to performance balance, and allowed me to use it problem free without having to upgrade my existing 750W PS. That will serve me fine for my main gaming / work computer for the next several years.
That said, it’s not MSFS future-proof. But in my case, I’m waiting for both the next gen of CPUs and GPUs to be readily available so that I can build a dedicated sim computer. That wil have a 4080 which are rumoured to have a minimum of 16GB VRAM.

Thank you… Every opinion and comment is valuable.
Appreciate the detailed opinion. All your points are well taken and will help my decision process.
Much Appreciated !
The 6900xt draws 50w less than a standard 3090 with very similar results. But TBH I would wait for next gen rather than choosing from a generation that is about to be succeeded.
You made a good point about the next gen cards, however, if they try and ■■■■ the customers again with exorbitant prices then I may just opt for the 30 series or wait longer. I just feel these vid cards are just not worth $1200.00 plus… Well, not to me.
There is a good video about the best PC for MSFS in 2022 for low, med and high level PCs
Thank you !
Much Appreciated !
I confused myself…
I assumed the 3050, 60, 70 etc was a GTX series (Whatever that means) but now I am seeing that the 3060, 70, 80 etc series nvidia cards are listed as the RTX. Maybe the GTX ended with the 20 series ? Obviously, I confused myself.
GTX finished with the 10 series. All 20 series are RTX, indicating designed for Ray Tracing.
Just get the best, most powerful card you can afford, there’s nothing more to it than that. No need to wait for the 40 series, if you do that then folk will be telling you to wait for the 50 series…
Good Point ! Thanks for the reply.
But the 60 series is going to be epic! I heard they are introducing Gary Tracing and going back to the GTX naming ![]()
We got it…sure…However, you did give us all a big smile… Everyone needs a smile now and then.
