Best aircraft for icing conditions

I would like to hear suggestions for aircraft that are fun to fly in icing conditions. Any bad weather fans out there?

I like the Kodiak, Beechcraft Model 18 and DC-6 for icing conditions.

Quite possibly any right now!

The modded (JPL) C152. It has no icing protection but as far as fun to fly, Iā€™m having a blast with it
entering and exiting icing conditions. It has the best visible depiction of icing Iā€™ve yet seen in MSFS.
Tip: Donā€™t stay in severe icing conditions for too long though or your flight will get quite dramatic

Or maybe notā€¦icing physics seem to have little to no performance effect

Are you referring to the modded C152? I have flirted with icing conditions in this bird and panic struggled to get it to descend and back under control. Everything literally froze up. Ailerons, elevator, rudder, trim, even the pitot tube and carb, causing severe power reduction despite pitot heater and carb heat being activated. Iā€™ve reproduced these effects several times in various flights. As the OPā€™s criteria was ā€˜fun,ā€™ I thought such experiences might qualify. If youā€™re not seeing these effects in the JPL C152 (v2), just stay in the poor conditions a while longer. Once the progressive visible icing reaches a certain point, the drama should start. At least it does for me.

That sounds quite awesome!

See the link posted above. There is some evidence (but more required) that icing is having little or no effect on aircraft performance. Your experiences would be a valuable contribution to that thread!

Sure, Iā€™ll review that thread, wasnā€™t aware of it, thanks.
Again, have you personally taken the specific aircraft and mod Iā€™ve written about in icing conditions? I would agree that most of the other MSFS aircraft do little about the flight model in icing conditions. This aircraft appears to be much better tuned by the authors in this regard.

Not personally no. And it certainly sounds like in that case it meets the OPs need very well. But it also highlights the challenge of determining if the icing effect regression is limited to particular aircraft or more universal. So all data is good data!

Indeed. Recently went through something similar on the ā€˜turbulence / wind gustā€™ thread after the last sim update. Spent days testing and found it was very aircraft and flight model dependent. Speaking of which, regarding the JPL C152, I can tell you the creatorā€™s flight modelling is simply superb in every regard not only for icing conditions, but its realistic reaction to the new Asobo turbulence/gust system.
Itā€™s a very special mod and a ā€˜must have.ā€™ PC only, unfortunately.

Well, I shall just have to go get it now!

I had a pretty scary icing experience in the Just Flight Piper Arrow, barely could keep the plane airborne. Maybe Icing works better on some planes than others.

Cirrus Vision Jet is a real gem to fly in icing conditions. Fun to watch the boots Inflate and deflate.

Seneca V is great with the ā€œweather windowā€ windscreen heater.

Cirrus SR22 can handle moderate icing and is always on my list for mountain flying.

Diamond DA62 cuts through the ice and looks great doing so. Window icing on this aircraft really looks nice.

Iā€™ve gotten in trouble with the Bonanza G36 and itā€™s less than optimal icing system. My whole windscreen was a sheet of ice on approach! However the Baron G58 is a work horse and has no problem in some icy snowy weather.

As well, on the 152 noteā€¦ Iā€™ve tried over and over to get icing in the carburetor, by descending without using the carb heat. The way I treat the thing my engine would be a block of ice. But for some reason the temps never drop and rpm can be regained like itā€™s a 75Ā° day. Iā€™m on Xbox so my mods / addons are limited.

Another aircraft that is fun in icing conditions is The Islander.

Besides having de-icing equipment, itā€™s also got modeled carb icing and you actually have to use carb heat to keep it performing.

Took the Extra up this morning at CYYJ Victoria, BC. Icing conditions at ground level with clear skies. No heat in the Extra.

Big storm coming down the Pacific Northwest coast this evening!

Itā€™s crazy, Iā€™m (my house) at 1000ā€™ here in the foothills along the Central Coast of CA and it snowed last night!

Are you using some mods or Cessna 152 modded? I tried hard to get to this state as you describe in stock Cessna 152 in sim 2020 xbox s. But I only achieved to get pitot blocked after not using pitot heat. Also got windscreen all froze up. But was unable to experience airfoils ice.

Yes, Iā€™m using the incredible WBSim/JPL C152 mod that is discussed here:
MSFS_C152 Community (V1.0.0!) - Updated: 09/10/2021 - User Support Hub / Aircraft & Systems - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

Never fly the C152 without it. Aside from the physical icing characteristics it also
has the virtue of representing the best visual icing effects Iā€™ve yet seen on any aircraft in MSFS.
