I have a 1660 graphics card with an HP Reverb G2. Is there a better graphics card (not looking for the most expensive) that I can purchase that will improve my VR graphics? Price limit is $300 or there about.
not really. Since VR on the G2 is like 4K resolution, with some extra overhead, cheap GPU’s simply won’t run it.
before DLSS I wouldn’t go below an RTX3080. Maybe with DLSS a RTX3070 will work, but will result in more blurry screens etc.
I know someone who is running VR with a 1660ti and he seems quite happy. Must be added though that he isnt an ardent pixel pusher.
You may be able to find a 2060 or 2070 used. But if you’re looking for a new card, you won’t get much better than what you already have with that budget.
MSFS in VR is pretty demanding on the GPU. You’re likely to not be terribly impressed with the performance difference with the replacement in that budget range.
It helps if you don’t know what you are missing!
I was blown away going from a gtx 1070 to an RTX 3080ti.
I hope the higher end 40xx series cards will bump the frame rates up to a smoother level.
I don’t play MSFS in VR, but I do have a Vive and do other stuff in VR. When I originally got the headset, I had an older computer (4770 + 1070). When I got a new computer with a 2080, the difference was astounding. I’ve since upgraded said machine to a 3070Ti, and the results are just mind blowing in terms of how smooth frame rates are at highest resolution in the games I do play.
VR is very demanding. While you can run it on lower end GPUs, you really don’t know what the experience is truly like unless you run it on a fast GPU.
In vr you need all the power you can get. I would advise to save a bit longer and go for a 3080 at least
Well, I myself dont use VR but went from 1660 Super to 3080 and there is no way on Earth that I would go back. Things move on and where I overspecced my new PC to one day take advantage of the hardware, it shows how fast things DO change and I would only give the advice that I took myself some twelve months ago and buy ahead as far as you can. Not cheap now, but the value comes later.
Until six months ago I was doing fine in VR with a RTX 2080. I had to lower my graphics expectations quite a bit and settle for between 20 and 30 fps. But I was a happy camper. I used a Reverb G2. There are also helpful tools such as the Open XR Toolkit. Settling for a 2080 is not necessarily a deal-breaker.
I’m running a 3070FE with a 5800X with 32Gb 3200 memory and am having awonderfully smooth experience in VR. Most settings on high with ultra for windscreen effects. Averaging 40/45 fps with DLSS quality but find a much better image using TAA and getting buttery smooth 33-35fps. This is using the open XR toolkit mind but I’m perfectly happy and don’t see any reason to splurge on any card more expensive.
I’d take 30 fps in VR over 120 fps in 2D.
Look on Amazon, i did manage to snag a 2060 for $273.00 about a month ago, Brand New EVGA 2060 12GB XC Black Gaming card, I don’t do VR so I don’t know what performance would look like.
You might be able to find a 3060ti for a FAIR price just a tad over yor budget if your willing to put in the extra cash.
im using the rtx 3070, so far im happy with this card. with dlss it runs great with 45 fps on 90Hz or 36 fps on 72
sure, you have to set down some settings, but the experience is also amazing. for me its actual not worth to upgrade for 3-4 fps more…
dlss and the openxr toolkit do some great work for us!
Thanks all, My VR experience with the 1660 is good, just not “crisp”. As a retired teacher at age 76, my income does not allow much. I am going to save my pennies and try for the 3080 or newer, but it will take time. My problem is I am always looking to “cut the corners”. I guess some corners can’t be cut! Thanks again, all!
