Best sounding aircraft?

What is the best sounding aircraft in your opinion? It can be out of the box or with mods (i.e. FTSIM).

And for sh** and giggles, you can add the worst sounding suspects too.

I’ll go first.

Best sounds:

  1. PMDG 737 - default sounds
  2. CJ4+ with FTSIM sounds
  3. C414
    (I haven’t bought the fenix A320 but I hear they’re good?)

Worst:

  1. Aerosoft CRJ (not the quality of the sounds but the transition of spool sounds, not quick enough imo)
  2. Aerosoft ATR (same reasons as above, supposedly the dev was going to fix it but didn’t?
  3. Cessna Caravan (default but FTMOD’s isn’t much better imo)
    (I would probably put the PMDG 777 in here too. I haven’t flown it but have listened to videos and deserves a spot in ‘worst sounds’ as I was surprised - the 737 does such a good job)

Audio realism can be pretty subjective so I’d imagine this topic could spark some debate :rofl:

Personal Comments and Observations

Any aircraft that uses sounds by Boris Audio Works (Boris Vanian). He’s on most of the popular online shops.

Totally agree on this ^^^^
All of them (C152, C172, Dukes, COWS DA42. There are more I am forgetting! Even SR-22 but that is kinda not the same as it’s a fixed RPM prop so a bit monotonous).

Others for me:

  • Comanche 250 (A2A). Very interesting how the sound is generated, being so dynamic. And the BEST wind transition sounds by far.
  • Vulcan (Just Flight). External view from behind on take off is nuts!
  • C310R (Blackbird). Lovely on powering up, very exciting. Windows open! The C414 is similar but the 310R just pinches it for me.
  • Spitfire (Flying Iron). They keep improving it - it’s alive!
  • Goose (Big Radials). Probably the best radial sounds in the sim. Especially with windows open!
  • Wilga (Got Friends). The overall sound package is totally top notch, it all just blends so well and feels real.
  • Chinook (Miltech). The “wakka wakka”.
  • Bell 206B JetRanger (Fly Inside). Best helicopter sound.
  • Cabri G2 (Asobo). Best 3D spatial effects.
  • Twin Otter with the FT Sim mod was pretty epic I think, but I have not flown it in years so not sure now.
  • BN2 Islander (Blackbox). Really nice, especially with the windows open. Not got the Trislander but tempted just for the extra oomph (potentially?) of the sounds!
  • AS33me glider (MADolo). OK, no engine sounds as such, but the wind sounds are sublime. Actually a few other gliders are on this level. The DG808S (Touching Cloud) and Discus (Got Friends), even the ones that came from Asobo in the 40th Anniversary update are great.

I actually don’t like the external sound of the Commanche :flushed:

Sounds a bit tinny to me. Maybe that’s how they sound in real life? No one’s ever seen a real one so hard to judge.

Personally think the JF Tomahawk has a much better Sunday airfield GA sound.

Yeah the Tomahawk is really nice too actually. I wasn’t talking about ‘external’ on the Comanche though, and yes the actual sound the engine makes is pretty weak compared to the other big beefy engines listed there, but I guess that is quite appropriate. It was more a nod to HOW the sounds is made up, and how it reacts so organically to all conditions, misfires, spluttering, the start-up and shut-down always being unique… and the wind sounds too (from cockpit) are just amazing the way it ramps up as you get into the orange on speed etc. Love it!

JF’s 146 because they are whispers :joy: You could also hear the electronics spool up and a/c changing in flight.

I have to agree… and to put another very unpopular opinion: I also don’t like the external sounds of the Duke. Granted the interior sounds are amazing, a joy to hear. Externally though it sounds a bit weird especially when panning the camera. I guess panning a camera externally is not realistic anyway so I just leave it at that.

It is another vote for the piston Duke here. The 414 would be the next choice. Both are a bit… visceral.

Be very careful, this could be construed as top ten list :rofl::rofl:

If such a thing did exist I wouldn’t be surprised if the top ten sounding aircraft were completely different to your top ten.

They most definitely are different! Sound counts for a lot for me, but “feel” and “fun” are more important!

Fenix A319 A320 and A321 from the cockpit external and the cabin wings view. Some RWP suggest is as close to real world as possible for a flight sim and I totally agree.

FBW is a close second.
