Better visual with new card... or just FPS

Hi

Disregard FPS… My questions is on visual…
I have a build a new computer, but stock with my very old graphic card at the moment…
(GTX770 4GB).
I am able it set the setting to Ultra… but with 10 FPS…
My question is the visual the same with a 3080/6800XT but just with higher FPS ??

hello,

if you play with the same resolution in ultra, yes the visual will be the same BUT normaly with highter FPS

bye

Depending on the aircraft type and 3rd party scenery you are using, you will get about 25 to 35 FPS with a 3080. Unlucky, the sim isn’t optimized for the 3xxx series yet.

Yes, assuming you use the same screen resolution in both cases.

If you want a hint of roughly the framerate you’ll get, try setting the sim to 720p with 50% render scaling and low graphics, then increase the two detail sliders to whatever you’re going to play at.
This is to make the CPU the bottleneck, which it’ll be when you get the new GPU. It will look completely awful but it’s useful info!

Surely that’s if people are setting things to high still as i get around that performance on an rtx 2070 in just under 4k.

No, there were many topics about this issue. I am having a 3080, together with a R7 3800X, 32 GB RAM and I don´t get better results when lowering the settings. Even on the low preset and with online data disabled, the GPU doesn´t get utilized. The game bottlenecks the new GPU´s, they are sitting at 30 to 60 percents max. . Another thing is the Limited by Mainthread topic, that´s also bottlenecking.

Hi speedpilot72,

The visual quality depends on your settings and the resolution of your monitor. In your case I’d take caution in buying a new Gpu. A lot of simmers are having disappointing results with even the fastest Gpu’s.
Assuming you use a 1440p (or higher) resolution monitor, you will be able to raise the settings which will result in an increase of quality.

I owned a Gtx-750ti and ran P3d at satisfying quality settings. Now I use a Gtx-1060 which handles Fs quite well at medium/high settings. I’m also planning to upgrade my Gpu but I’ll await upcoming enhancements first.

Good luck with your quest

Let me make it easier for with your current card obviously higher fps better visuals with a newer gen card. Either way enjoy your new card

There was an issue with clouds on the 770 cards but apparently now fixed.

So right now you will mainly get better FPS and maybe less stutters ( potentially the newer cards may allow some more postprocessing if you could be bothered messing about with it )

At some future point if MSFS gets Ray Tracing there will be a definite difference in visuals . The game Control on an RTX card is amazing.

You also pick up the ability to plug in a VR headset which is simply not going to be feasible on a 770.

TLDR version:

  • right now performance and the option to use VR
  • at some future time, potentially ray tracing

With my MX330/16GB/I7 laptop, my frame rate above Paris commercial scenery drops to 5-10FPS when flying under 1000Ft… moving a small propellor plane for inappropriate landings can be nasty, you crash into a building before the screen update is ready !

The Paris scenery represents a mountain of data.

I think a lot of work was already done by Asobo. This game can load thousands of meshes, millions of triangles. I suppose our hardware is expected to be high end, or grow 5-10 years, to allow smooth (at least 20-30fps) quality everywhere. Lighting quality - expensive - can still be improved. City detail should be properly lighted ! Paris is nice - shadows - but in many other city scenery, the lighting is ambient and buildings come out desaturated.

One relevant optimization I can think of is changing ground tesselation detail in case of airliners. Flying on high altitude needs a very far view, so there is a lot of download because of the scenery. But airliners don’t fly really low, so detail is needed in ground texture, not in the 3D meshes.Tesselation can be coarse (large triangles) at 5.000 feet or more. When you fly low, like Cessna’s and other propellors do, the range can be much more limited, but the 3D meshes should be shining ! In above image, that horizon is very far away: I don’t actually need to see the Eiffel Tower. I am at 300 feet, I want to see the streets below and have 20FpS, not 8FpS. Settings can be tweaked, but as a user I don’t want to tweak all the time.
