Bing Maps in dire need of an update

This definitely is not true. It adds a ton of real-world obstructions like cell towers and factory smoke stacks; not “randomly” but in their charted locations. In total, it adds hundreds or thousands of identifiable, charted landmarks that weren’t in the sim to start with.

It may not add missing roads (though I believe it does help uncover railroads), but it’s FAR from useless for pilotage.

Updating the photogrammetry and satellite imagery of entire cities and countries take a whole lot of time. It’s not just a single day operation.

What Bing need to do is have a solid roadmap of all the countries they need to update, and they’re doing exactly that.

What I could see can be done better is the faster reflection of updates to Bing maps into MSFS.

Nonsense.

Everything it adds is in the correct place according to the data sources used.
Some of the cranes may no longer be correct obviously but communication, radio, and tv antennas, chimneys, radar domes and satellite/radio telescope dishes are all absolutely in the correct places.

There may well be the occasional mistake and if so let PuffinFlight know and it will be corrected, but it is all placed according to the data source and certainly where i fly everything is spot on.

Pretty sure Gatwick isn’t supposed to have a 150ft radio mast 30 yards from the threshold of 08L which I saw the other day.

It may have bugs

Hehe, yup as i said, there may be a few errors, but considering the thousands of objects i’d bet it’s an absolutely miniscule percentage.

What is clear though it isn’t “only tower cranes and chimneys randomly that aren’t there in real life”

Imagine the hundreds of hours of work Puffin put into gathering and parsing all that data and implementing it into the game only for someone to come in and say it’s all randomly placed and useless!

That being said, where in the data would it say place a radio mast 30 yards from 08 L at a busy international airport. I can’t 100% say but I’m sure that data doesn’t exist for safety reasons.

If the data doesn’t exist then it’s likely issue is the placement algorithm is flawed around airports.

Guys, chill. We Love VFR has errors, just like Asobos’ OSM data has many. I can’t verify EVERY mast and chimney in the world so if there is something wrong with OSM data, or FAA data (yeah, they are not accurate either) it is the same in We Love VFR.

The new update will have all objects over 200m tall verified manually. Currently, just in Region 1, there are at least 6000 manually verified objects.

@HURCN30 are you sure it was my add-on? Around Gatwick, I see only one antenna (red dot) that is over 1km from the threshold. Still, it’s too tall and I’ll remove it. But if you see any errors it’s better for everyone to just report them to me, so I can correct them. I can’t monitor every thread on every forum where someone is complaining about my add-on, although I try

BTW all objects in a 1,7 km radius from the center of the airport and 500m from every airport area node are verified manually on every update. There may be some rare cases where the airport is omitted by my system, but for now, I know only about one such case (Stuttgart) and it is handled manually.

Last thing - tower cranes. These are tricky. Construction sites come and go and because of not having access to bing API I can’t tell when Bing imagery was made. So you have for example correct data on the construction site but the bing photo was taken before it even started.
I’ve changed some parameters for the new update so it will have fewer construction sites and hopefully, they will be more in line with bing imagery. You always can remove any type of object in my add-on. Just go into my add-on’s scenery and remove the construction cranes folder.

Yea I have both those free VFR regions packs installed already. Doesn’t stop my desire for more detail

I hope Orbx eventually do more in GB. They only have Central completed now.

Totally a fan of your product and never fly without it. It adds so much more to the sim. Region 1 could do with more “smoke” if I had anything constructive to say. I’m exploring the UK and France and aside from tall chimneys and power plants theirs no other places I could see “smoking” :joy:

I’ll check again tonight and report back but that antenna is on the right side of 08 L

Ok, it is a bit jarring  Still, not 30 yards :stuck_out_tongue:

It will; be removed in this week’s update. I’ll also try to create an area around airports that will limit heigh of objects that have no height data. I think I use something like that but maybe the radius is too small.

In the case of smoke, my testers found a bug that was greatly reducing steam effects on cooling towers in Europe. Now there will be at least 3x more of those. Also, I put smoke effects only on chimneys over 80m tall and a limited amount of effects in one area to not affect FPS that much.

Wow! Big thanks for the quick response, I merely mentioned it just off the bat of the thread. I could have sworn it was closer, but perhaps my climb rates aren’t as steep as they should be in the DA62 or TBM.

Regarding the smoke is there or could there be a “config” option to enable more?

Thanks for your fantastic work and the continued support and updating of your products. It really is a “cant live without it” mod!

Just sent you some well deserved beer money.

Smoke is just a scenery with smoke generating objects placed randomly over chimneys that fill the criteria. it might be possible to generate more, but into a separate file that would be disabled by default. But without an installer, it’d be a bit convoluted.

Thank you! I really appreciate it.

We don’t talk about google no no no

Need to get that Love VFR stuff in xbox. Exact or not, its amazing how much ‘life’ a radio tower adds to it. Too bad the textures these days aren’t the ‘Sim City’ type of yore where you could randomly drop tractors or cows on ‘Agriculture tiles’.

Do the devs have access to less cloudy/more recent satellite pics, or is what is currently on Bing Maps as good as it gets?

You will notice with the World Updates the imagery is improved and updated.
