Biting the bullet and migrating from Xbox to PC - A Journal

All this back and forth helped me to get my v-sync settings dialed in to the point where I’m on the ground at Flight Beam KMSP holding a steady locked 60fps with no cockpit tearing and FSLTL traffic at sunset in the Fenix, with United paint and IAE engines, so I’m about the happiest guy in the world right now, jeepers. Thanks all for helping to break this down. So mighty kind and selfless of you.

Happy days! Just virtually sitting in the new Fenix block 2 and looking around is an enjoyable experience. Flying it is even better! They’ve reached new levels never previously seen before in a desktop simulator with that addon.

@JakTrax78 I hope you get your PC build sorted as I’m considering my options with Xbox and am in a similar position to you. I love that Xbox is pick up and play but want to try some of the extras like VATSIM, GSX and Fenix.

I’m sure that you’ll get it sorted and am looking forward to your experiences but it makes me think that maybe I’ll go for a pre-built MSFS already installed PC from a vendor (as I’m not a techie either).

Keep going buddy.

Is there such a thing? Even if there is, doesn’t mean it will be well set up!

I’m thinking the same thing.

Also (and this is a question I don’t know the answer to) are the models compatible with a PC the same as those compatible with an Xbox? Do they have the same textures, and use the same code? Or are Xbox versions of the same plane less resource intensive?

Everything is definitely higher-fidelity on PC. Aircraft, airports, cities… whether it be draw distance or texturing.

But people are claiming to be getting really smooth performance with both FSLTL (which I installed last night) and third-party airports, with a similar spec to mine.

I did more fiddling last night and was extremely impressed with how I got Orbx Gold Coast and Gladstone to perform. Absolutely super-smooth. But at larger airports, with FSLTL, it’s really quite stuttery. I’ll post some images with the fps counter thing top-right.

FSLTL is pretty impressive but what I don’t like is how you get unrealistic ‘clumps’ of aircraft landing on top of one another. I believe JF’s FS Traffic has better spacing between arrivals and departures?

Reduce FSLTL settings, it will hammer your CPU if you’re not careful…

Not only should you reduce FSLTL settings as @Bondjpf suggested, but also MAKE SURE your AI aircraft traffic settings are turned off in the sim’s traffic settings tab. Otherwise you’ll have two traffic injectors running, giving you more or less double the amount of traffic, and the sim turns into a slide show.

When adjusting the FSLTL settings, the raw performance isn’t the only concern. If you use the sim’s ATC, keeping traffic settings too high will result in non-stop radio communications in busy areas. I personally run FSLTL IFR traffic at about 30, plus a little VFR traffic, mostly for this reason. Otherwise good luck getting a word in edgewise. Having too much traffic can also increase the chances of a bug popping up where the ATC audio drops out all together (which I’ve heard is being addressed in the current beta). You can turn on historic parking for a little extra filling at the terminals if you want airports to look busier.

Yes, it was all turned off already as I hate the sim’s own AI traffic. I did dial down some settings but clearly not enough.

Decided to buy a monitor (was really the plan anyway as I’m getting moaned at for constantly hogging two TVs!). But I’m wondering how much I need to spend — I can get a cheap 4K example for about £150 (60Hz) but if a more expensive one is going to give me better performance/results, I’m happy to go higher. I’ve come this far; might as well get the most out of my PC.

So, what would you guys recommend? I don’t really have a budget but I’d rather not spend a great deal if I don’t need to.

By the way, I got black avionics at Drzewiecki’s KEWR just now, with the PMDG 738 and FSLTL. I reloaded twice thereafter and it was still happening. Didn’t think this was an issue on PC?

I’m really looking forward to that. My PC is due to arrive tomorrow. Although I probably won’t be able to test it properly until the weekend. And then I’ll report on my performance. At least I already have a 120 HZ TV with VRR. That could be an advantage.

Would that not be the same as your current TV? High-end monitors are expensive, so I’m currently looking at either a Hisense 55" U7-U7K-U75K (~ $480 recently) or TCL 55" Q6_Q650G QLED (~ $350 recently) TV. Check out rtings.com - they give specs & a lot of data for a variety of monitors & TVs.

I’m on Xbox but VRR definitely improves performance. Not having to wait for a frame sync seems to allow the code to perform better. Any PC MSFS users enjoying VRR?

Is VRR better than, say, a set 120Hz? Or are they one and the same thing?

This is better described on the Internet than I could explain:

Thanks. So I need to look for a monitor that supports AMD Freesync?

Good to see you upgrading your monitor! One thing to keep in mind is that the cheapest monitors will not have the gaming features you need like freesync so you’ll probably want to go upmarket a little to get what you need. I made this mistake and ended up buying another TV after about 12 months.

Key features to consider:

  • At least 120Hz-144Hz refresh rate
  • HDR10+ minimum
  • HDMI 2.1 and/or Display Port v1.4
  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
  • Freesync
  • Auto Game Mode (ALLM) with low inut lag
  • Screen supports at least 600 nits brightness (1000 nits ideally)

Here is a good article on best gaming TV’s

Best Gaming TV’s 2024

Edit: The Hisense 55-Inch TV in the article above would be a great monitor for MSFS (but don’t go any lower due to lack of key features).

I am also convinced that a monitor with 120/144 Hz and VRR helps. After I activated 120 Hz mode on the Xbox and VRR on the TV a few months ago, the MSFS ran much more smoothly.

That’s why I’m really excited to see how my new PC performs together with my TV. 120 Hz, VRR, RTX 4090 - it should be a well-rounded package.

I don’t have the PMDG but I’ve never ever had black screens on PC, well except for very rare occasions on the Fenix when the external app broke.

Was this black screens from the start, or did they drop out during use xbox style?

I do have FSLTL traffic turned down from the defaults for all of the reasons already mentioned above, I have static aircraft turned up so the airport still looks sensibly full but there is some traffic moving around.

No, from the start of the flight (spawning on the runway). Thought it odd so I reloaded the flight but got them again. Quit the sim and restarted it and it happened a third time. Went to KPWM instead, immediately after, and all fine.

I take it these drain less resources when in static mode?
