Black Square Steam Gauge Overhaul - King Air 350i

Of course I could not resist due to the many excellent reviews and have now bought the KingAir after the C208B.

The first two short flights from Tampa to Ft. Myers and then on to Naples were very promising. The system depth is unique and the flight behavior feels good. The KA would have the potential to be my favorite airplane if it weren’t for a few little things I don’t like:

  • the autopilot is very unfortunate placed. To change the instrument view to be able to operate the AP I find not well solved.

  • I have the impression that the KA is very frame hungry. On approach, touchdown and taxi to the gate the fps keep going down. Can you share this experience?

Overall the KA is a great aircraft. Compliments to Blacksquare!

I noticed this as well, but I don’t believe (at least for me) that it is an issue with just the KA. My frame rate drops and stutters on approach and taxi are because, i assume, the scenery loading on approach. And the complex airport scenery while on the ground. Seems to be exacerbated in SU11 Beta too.

Yes, they (Blacksquare & their contributors) have definitely raised the bar for MSFS “Add-ons”.

I always map those “below the throttle” placed essential views to my own custom view (it’s always “Save to custom view 5”, out of habit), and then recall the custom view quickly with whatever i bind it to.

You can easily get there.

  • Change the eye point value in your cameras.cfg file to -2.3 (the default is 4.3).
  • Launch the simulator and spawn with your KA, you’ll find yourself in the middle of the cabin. Note: If you end up outside and in front of the plane, then the value above should be 10.3 LOL.
  • Use your arrow keys to go back a couple more rows further to the very back of the cabin and save any custom view (or two) there. Don’t save your wings views now, that’s for the later step.
  • Exit MSFS and revert the eye point back to 4.3
  • Launch MSFS and spawn again. You’ll find yourself in the cockpit. Recall the custom view you saved before. Now you can move around and set your custom wings views etc.

Thanks for the tip. I will give it a try :slightly_smiling_face:

I have already changed the intial x,y,z values so that custom view ‘0’ is a kind of a hud view so I will have a look for a value of 4.3 in the cfg file and go on from there.

Many thanks :+1:

Hmmm … I notice this massive fps drop down on approach only with Blacksquare KA and Caranedo PC-12 … never experienced it with any other aircraft including Blacksquare C208B … strange, isn`t it?

“Massive fps drop” ? No not getting that. Just a few stutters and maybe 5-10 fps difference.
However, on a few rare occasions, the PMS50 GTN’s map screen caused massive fps drop. like a 5 fps slide show. But once i switch to any other screen like flight plan or home screen, the frame rates would resume normally.

This is all in VR too… so there’s that.

I get that too. It always happens when I’m close to the destination airport and it almost messes up my final approach. Luckily the sim freezes completely for a couple of seconds so my airplane remains static during the fps drop. Otherwise I would crash every time.

Do you have this problem only with certain aircraft or in general?

I’ve mostly been flying the King Air lately but I will try another aircraft tonight and see if the problem persists.

Tried this but it doesn’t work for me. With value -2.3 I could set the wing views perfectly, saved them to custom views and then exited MSFS, changed the cameras file back to 4.3 but once I do that and re-start the custom views are resetted to be inside the cockpit.

Because you missed that step:

  • Use your arrow keys to go back a couple more rows further to the very back of the cabin and save a custom view (or two) there.

You need to move back till the very back of the cabin and save any random custom view (don’t save your wings views yet). After that, exit and reset to 4.3.

I’m also assuming that you know you’re supposed to recall the custom view you saved right? When you spawn back again at 4.3, you’re supposed to be in the cockpit:)

Use "load custom view 1-2-3-4 etc…to go to the cabin.

Basically: Don’t save your REAL wings view the first time, just save any view at the very back. When you spawn back at 4.3, recall that custom view in the back you saved earlier and NOW you can start saving your wings views.

I edited my OP to make things clearer.

is that a control binding?

Boy, FSX views were so much easier. Ever since 2020, I have never been able to understand the new “camera” views.

Save custom view = Ctrl+Alt+(x) where x is a number
Load custom view = Alt+(x) where x is a number

Ah, Thank You!

Thanks a lot, that was indeed the case!
Now I can set custom views inside the cabin or cockpit as I like.
Wish MSFS also had a way to setup external views that I could bid to a key.

Search for “fixed views” in the keyboard binding, those are nice. But yes you cannot save custom views outside.

Well technically you sometimes can if the aircraft does not have collision inside the cabin, meaning if you move around the cabin you can go through doors and go outside. If that’s the case, then just set a custom view outside just like you did inside.

Not sure if the analog KA has collision or not. Haven’t checked. I believe it does.

Yes! For the King Air you can get outside and define views. But you are limited to the 10 custom views you can set for the cockpit.
