Blacksquare Bonanza Landing Lights Glare

Flying the fantatic Blacksquare Bonanza at night and one of the first things I noticed was the landing lights produce such an intense glare that it makes it actually impossible to see what’s in front of you. The only way to land is with both landing lights and taxi lights off. Is this correct?

I’ve not found a plane in 2024 that doesn’t do this. Also, strobes will do it. Oddly, the Bonanza/Baron have a EFB option to disable strobe cloud effects. I wonder if they could apply that to landing/taxi lights too?

IIRC Turning off volumetric clouds in the graphics will stop the effect. It’s a good effect but far too strong IMO.

It would make sense in fog, or cloud. But if there is nothing for the lights to illuminate in the atmosphere you wouldn’t see those light cones, just what the light impacts.

gotcha, it’s a system-wide issue. looks like we’re landing dark!

I always land in the dark…..as I always shut my eyes on landing…I’m petrified  :joy:

I got to wondering about this after flying a plane where this didn’t happen and it turns out this isn’t universal at all. It’s down to one simple setting in the fx file for the landing lights to turn volumetric on or off. Unfortunately in further testing I discovered that if you turn off the volumetric setting, the brightness is vastly impacted. So after some testing, here’s where I ended up. These are on the BS Baron but same idea

So yeah, it’s adjustable but what a pain to do it as an external modder

good to know! hopefully modders will learn about this

Well good news and bad news. Good news is I’ve already integrated this into a few of my mods and am working on the rest of my favourite aircraft.

Bad news is that it is very far from consistent. The numbers change from aircraft to aircraft and in some just plain ol’ don’t work. And I have no idea why. But I’m still experimenting

This really needs more awareness from the devs so they can fix it out of the box
