Bugalaga landing method

I have been unable to land with an A rating at Bugalaga. I could use some help from people who have solved this challenge.

  • Did you land with flaps down?
  • How fast were you going on approach?
  • How much throttle did you have on at landing?
  • Any other hints?

Thanks,
Michael

Hey Michael… I moved this into #self-service:online-services-activities since advice is sought.

I really enjoy this landing challenge (not least from a scenery point of view  )

“low and slow” is a good guide for achieving a better score on all landing challenges in MSFS, due to the nature of how the scoring system works.

This somewhat applies to Bugalaga as well… however an added complication with this landing challenge is the sloped runway which makes for a differnt flare technique… as trying to let the aircraft settle onto a sloped runway is a bit different to letting it settle on to a horizontal runway. I still think speed management is important (especially as there is a risk of running right over the top of the hill and down the cliff on the other side!)

Settling on to this runway means “reducing the rate of climb” at the last minute so that the wheels just touch down on the sloped runway.

I guess you have tried a more aggressive flare in the final moments with a then easing of this flare to try and achieve this “smoother” touchdown?

I am no expert by any means in this landing challenge and have only just managed to scrape an “A” grade…

I think what might work is trying to ensure touchdown occurs within the blue zone, as much as possible, and keeping the runway alignment correct so there is not too much roll left or right and slow enough to be able to stop in time. The “softness” of the landing can be worked on with this sort of flare, I am guessing!

Hopefully more experienced folks will be able to provide better tips.

Since I had MSFS open I just retried this challenge and funnily enough improved my score:

(I cropped the screenshot to protect the results of the rest of those on my friend list)

I approached the runway at about 75-80 knots with full flaps about 6300 feet (for the last 1/4 mile or so) and cut the power approaching the threshold and flared more than normal. I also find with the slight wind I had to come in with the nose pointing off to the right and used a little left rudder just before touchdown. I still landed a little beyond the blue landing area so I guess cutting power a little earlier would have helped.

I wish you success (and continued fun!) with this landing challenge.

I have been trying to land without flaps. I will add them and see if it helps.
