Moin Landratten (Landlubbers) and happy international women’s day March 08th.
Almost a year ago I took you on a sightseeing tour in my neighborhood - the Frisian islands. Because it’s been so well accepted and liked, I wanted to use my turn on events to visit the islands with you all again. But of course the flight plan has changed a little. We will be going north to south and I’m hoping for strong winds to challenge each and everyone of us. The Frisian islands are located off the coast in the north sea. Runways are short and windy, so we might have a few challenging landings. A few interesting things / facts to know:
- a few of these islands are really small, called “Hallig” in german, or “small flat island”. And the name says it. These islands are so flat, they need a dike to not get flooded. Basically think of it as having a dike around your house and you are surrounded by water. Well and you are off shore of course. Enjoy!
- Some islands need or needed air mail for getting their supplies, famously used is the Islander. If you have the islander as an add-on it comes standard with the OLT livery, which is the local airline flying here.
- The frisian islands are located in the Wadden Sea, the biggest in the world. Tourists often ask “where is the water?” when visiting for a day at the beach. Well check again in a few hours. Until then enjoy a lovely mudflat hike.
- The East Frisian have developed a distinct tea culture. Quoting from the German Commission for UNESCO: “Generally, the tea is not stirred, so that with each sip a different taste is experienced: first the mild cream, then the strong tea and finally the sweetness of the rock sugar.”
Also for those interested in our VA: you could rent a Islander at our hub Samedan and fly it up to the german coast replicating the joy of island hopping in an Islander. If you are interested ping me and I’ll send you our on-boarding message including all helpful links and tis. If you happen to fly on VATSIM through our VA feel free to use BD (“BushDiver”) as your callsign.

Speaking from experience I can recommend flying the Comanche, as it’s really shaky in the turbulence. Looking forward to flying with all of you!
