Bush Divers Invitational - SOUTHERN ANDES - Lago Colbún/Colorado Airport (SCSK) to Malargüe (SAMM)
Find yourself a powerful bushplane for his one! Some pretty high mountains coming up. This weekend, we will be flying and crossing the southern Andes from Chile to Argentina. We will be departing out of Colorado Airport (SCSK) on the shore of Lago Colbún, climbing towards the twin volcanoes Grand Descabezado and Quizapu and cresting the top of our climb in between them.
Next we will be descending back to the western foothills of the Andes and land at El Baúl airstrip (SCBU).
Then we start climbing again eastwards into the Andes reaching an altitude of 11,700 ft , not too far from the crash-site of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, a Fairchild FH-227D, that left 33 passengers trying to survive for 72 days in the mountains with freezing temperatures (1972, aka Andes flight disaster / Miracle of the Andes).
As there are no airstrips in this mountainous area we will land at two off-field sites near rivers.
Before we turn south to our destination watch out for a huge black lava field (WP65) just northwest of the uranium mining town of Malargüe.
2 airstrips and 2 off-field landings, in total 162 nm.
Max. altitude 11,800 ft (!). You might want to go with a turboprop or at least something turbocharged.
