I’m trying to set a button to turn VS mode on/off (172 G1000) but cannot find a Simconnect commmand or a keybinding for this. I can INC/DEC with buttons using AP_VS_VAR_INC/DEC or CTRL+Home/END but can’t turn VS on/off (have to use in-game button). Anyone?
Also, I was hoping to create buttons for controlling FLC but no luck with On/Off or Inc/Dec.
The SimConnect events to control Garmins aren’t currently implemented in the SDK. They’re listed as events, but they don’t actually do anything at this time.
I’m using Simconnect commands for all of my buttons except for “VS/FLC” on/off, can also send keybinds if Simconnect commands aren’t available. I had read somewhere that VS could be turned on/off with keybindings but I don’t see how.
For my button box I’m running SimDashboard on an Android tablet. I originally had purchased SimDashboard for use with American Truck Simulator and my racing sims but there’s also enough MSFS2020 functionality for my purposes.
There is a Flight Level Change option in the autopilot section, but this is not assigned to any key by default. Does this not work, assigning it to keys if necessary?
Question: If VS mode is on, and you are trying to turn it off, what is it that you want the AP to do as far as altitude control?
You want it to just go into pitch mode and hold the current pitch angle from now on – even if it means blowing through the set altitude?
You want it to go to ALT HOLD mode and hold the current altitude (and not the target altitude you may have set)?
You want it to pitch up to the max pitch setting for that plane in order to get to the target altitude you have set? (This implies you want it to ignore the plane’s speed and assume you have set enough throttle for the climb, and that at full throttle in the current conditions the plane is able to achieve and maintain max pitch without stalling?)
I think you’ll quickly realize that once VS mode is selected, you can’t just turn it off without giving the AP more information. It’s the same as turning on ALT mode with a higher or lower target altitude, but not telling it how to get there (using VS mode).
So VS mode gets turned off:
Automatically when reaching the target altitude.
Selecting some other vertical mode like ALT HOLD (current altitude).
Turning off the autopilot.
If you currently use a keystroke to turn off VS mode once it’s on, you are going to get Asobo’s behavior as to what the AP will do in that case. I don’t know what that will be because they keep changing the behavior, and the different mods can make it do different things in different planes, too.
I have a button box with rotary encoders ,I have one button when set to on is for VS, When set to off i have FLC enabled + i also use 2 rotarys 1 for climbrate VS and One for airspeed FLC.
The event your looking for is VS=AP_VS_ON
FLC=FLIGHT_LEVEL_CHANGE
That’s what I needed. I had searched through the in-game and online keybinding guides but found nothing. I do see the problem now… the in-game Options/Keyboard “Filter” was set to “Assigned” (default ???) so I completely missed the extra things I can assigns keys to. Thanks!
I spent several days wondering why I couldn’t see all the commands, before I realised I needed to change this setting. I do wish they had produced a simple manual making it more obvious.
I’ll admit that I don’t have a good grasp on the details yet (MSFS2020 and aviation knowledge), I just jumped in recently and started to tinker.
I’m now starting to understand how VS works and a simple on/off button won’t mimic the actual functionality. At least I’ve now been able to turn VS on with a keybinding for my button to adjust VS -+. The sim will turn VS off as you mentioned.
The problem was that I didn’t know I could assign a keybinding for VS - the games’ keybinding filter defaults to “Assigned” (changed to All) so I was missing the other functions that could be assigned with a key combo. Another reply pointed me in the right direction.
Don’t worry Fuzzy, NOBODY has a good grasp of the sim details yet because it’s a newborn just yet. Asobo is still learning how things are supposed to work, and they keep changing things. The mod groups (Working Title and Fly By Wire) are constantly adding and changing things, too.
I like that you said you’re still growing your aviation knowledge. That’s the key. Learn about basic flight and basic instruments. I always say, “Learn to fly the plane before you learn to fly the autopilot.”
– Actually I do say that in many different ways, but I just made up that quote. From now on, I’m going to say it that way.
