ISSUE DESCRIPTION
Description of the issue:
When flying with the C-17 Globemaster III and more precisely when landing with it using ILS, the ILS information (“needles”) don’t show on the display if there’s no Flight Plan present, namely an approach to the runway inserted in the Flight Mission Computer or FMC even with the proper ILS frequency in NAV1 inserted and the NAV selector set to position “1” (VOR/ILS 1).
But if I have a Flight Plan inserted in the FMC including approach then the ILS seem to work ok.
I don’t think it should work this way because ILS should be able to work independently if there’s a Flight Plan present or not.
A second issue with the C-17 Globemaster III is TACAN. It doesn’t work by pointing the TACAN station’s direction even after a nearby TACAN station is correctly tuned. TACAN in the C-17 Globemaster III only display range information (DME). It is as if the C-17 Globemaster III TACAN is a civilian one when in fact and for obvious reasons it shouldn’t (C-17 Globemaster III is afterall a military aircraft).
If applicable, which aircraft is experiencing this issue:
C-17 Globemaster III

REPRODUCTION STEPS
The ILS issue (not working without Flight Plan):
- Takeoff with the C-17 Globemaster III in a Free Flight scenario and head to an airport equipped with ILS. When creating and placing the C-17 Globemaster III in the Free Flight scenario make sure you only Set a Departure. Do NOT Set an Arrival in order to ensure that no flight plan will be present when you start the flight/test.
- Make sure you don’t add any Flight Plan during the flight and that NO Flight Plan is present.
- Tune the ILS station of the runway that you intend to approach and land on NAV 1.
- Turn the Nav Selector Knob from “MSN” position to “1” position.
- Look at the Primary Flight Display (PFD) and no needles are present when they should be.
The ILS issue (working with Flight Plan):
- Repeats points 1. and 2. above and ensure that now you have a Flight Plan set, namely one that includes the approach and runway intended to land
- Tune the ILS station of the runway that you intend to approach and land.
- Turn the Nav Selector Knob from “MSN” position to “1” position.
- Look at the Primary Flight Display (PFD) and now the ILS needles should be present.
The TACAN issue:
- Fly the C-17 Globemaster III in a Free Flight scenario at range of a TACAN station and tune the TACAN station. For example use: Cold Lake (Alberta, Canada) TACAN - UOD, Channel 82X
- Turn the Left BDHI knob to TAC (TACAN) position.
- You’ll see that in the display located on the right side of both Left and Right BDHI knobs will “come to life” but the direction needle points into a direction away from the TACAN station. However the range information (DME) shown on “DIST 1” right above seem to indicate accurate distance/range information.
- By the way, when turning the Nav Selector Knob to TAC (TACAN, I gather) then no TACAN information is shown on the Navigation Display.
