C172 Skyhawk: Starting Engine

I am trying to follow the “Starting Engine (with battery)” checklist in the EFB. I am somewhat lost at these steps:

  1. STBY battery switch - ARM: Verify that the PFD comes on. Arm/Off/Test all seem to do not do anything. This only works if I turn on the Master BAT switch. Shouldn’t the Garmin power up with STBY battery set to ARM? Do I misunderstand this or is it not working? (This is partially solved: SimConnect events sent by SPAD.next seem to break the internally maintained battery state … ?)

  2. Engine indicating system - CHECK PARAMETERS: Verify no red X’s through ENGINE page indicators. Is this the page after hitting the soft keys for Engine > System on the PFD?

Thanks!

Are you referring to the C172 Classic (steam gauges) or the C172 G1000 as indicated in the tag ?

It’s the G1000.

I think I know the reason for why 1. is not working: I am using SPAD.next to send SimConnect events for controlling the alternator and battery. This seems to lead to some state in which ARM does not work. If I do not use the switches I can activate the standby battery usage and it works as I would expect.

My question about 2. - where on the PFD do I need to check for engine problems? - still stands, though. This is mostly a G1000 question.
