During a career mission with the C208 Caravan, I noticed an issue with the autopilot.
When autopilot was engaged, the plane had problems following the flightplan.
It kept wallowing back and forth for a very long time, before finally starting flying straight.
Not sure if this was an issue with the flightplan, or the plane itself.
Will investigate more tomorrow, when I`m planning on a 3 hout cargo mission.
I have used it even with the wallowing issue.
Today it went completely bonkers, and commanded a steep climb.
Safe to say that this aircraft is in the hangar until fixed.
Let`s hope this is one of the fixes in the upcoming patch or two.
Just purchased a used C-208 in career, but still have to pay 1,1m in maintenance. lol
Autopilot does not engage at all in my C208. Is there anything different than in 2020? I stabilize in cruise, set the HDG bug and select the altitude, ALT, but the AP button does not activate the AP. Both avionics are on and all breakers in. Any advice? Thanks!
Edit 1 week later: must have been a glitch, or version/livery related, because since then the AP has engaged correctly every time.
Weird that it doesn’t engage at all. Mine engages and works but, like the others, it’s too slow to react to it and is often endlessly chasing the autopilot.
I’ve had a lot of issues with the Caravan as well with the Autopilot having a hard time. The plane will porpoise 5-700 feet nose up and nose down the whole flight and NAV mode sometimes works. I’ve yet to get a good flight out of the aircraft. If I use sim rate higher than 1x the plane sounds like it’s going to rip itself apart. Makes these medium cargo missions extremely long.
I’ve noticed the lateral alignment issues where the aircraft is struggling to be smooth with aligning with the nav route. Have to put it in heading in the right place and then reactivate nav.
I fly some missions with a higher sim rate which I still hold 100+fps, but find it seems to suffer the same issue with vertical adjustments too. It blows past the altitude assigned then dives to try and reach it again before going to far, etc
I’m using the C208 and the AP in HDG mode for the around the world trip with Neofly. It wobbles like it does, but otherwise it gets where it is supposed to. Another thing I noticed is that the winds at 8000 to 14000 ft, where most of the legs are flown, are remarkably close to Meteoblue, since accounting for the drift, calculated using the charts and my Pooley’s always brings me within a few miles over 200 nm flights.
In fact, the airplane wobbles in straight and level flight on the autopilot too. It’s if the winds are really giving it a hard time. Perhaps dial down the turbulence?
But It struggles mostly when climbing. When level it seems to behave less badly but still wanders around stupidly. Looks like a flight physics issue.
Shame cos most ppl will be using this in career mode for cargo runs, like ME, and that autopilot must be using an old Intel 386 processor from 1993.
I have found a way to fly it without severe problems.
Hand fly it until you are stable on nav heading and the correct attitude.
It will then behave almost normal.
Still pitches down to capture FLC, but there are more planes doing this in the sim right now.
I’ve also had various issues with AP in the C208 including extreme pendulum swinging lateral, and vertical. Also FLC mode not respecting the set airspeed (Vy) and pitching up and extreme degree stalling out the plane. Similar on approach, stalling out the plane despite being on a descending glide slope. It is somewhat useable once in cruise / straight and level flight but turbulence can still cause extreme pendulum swinging and potentially stalling the plane.
I’ve also had quite a few issues with this plane. Flight plans often want you to go to 29000 ft. Plane only supports 25k. Had a crash there. The other day it went into a stall right from take off. No noticeable reason.
Also have to use heading mode to get it to go somewhere. Nav doesn’t do anything.
Really frustrating seeing how much I’ve already spent on this plane.
