C208 EX Cruise configuration

Hi all,

I’m just trying to figure out the best engine configuration for a long cruise in the C208.
In the image I have shown below, i have RPM set at 1750 ish, ITT at 584, TRQ at 1450-1500 ish, IAS of 133, GS of 161.

I’ve done quite a bit of shorter manual flights with the C208, but looking for guidance on best cruise settings to maximise fuel and aircraft condition. Any long timer C208 virtual pilots please share your experience.

Thanks

Moved to User Support Hub that is more appropriate for community support.

My normal cruise is usually Prop 1800, and either torque or ITT as high as I can reasonably get it. I usually cruise closer to 175TAS at 12,000ft. Try moving torque to the blue marker. Just watch your fuel flow. Whatever cruise setting works for you plan your fuel off that fuel flow to make sure you have enough

Fuel flow is going to vary with altitude and temperature to some degree (density altitude) if I recall correctly, so the answer you are seeking depends on your flight planning to some degree. What is a long cruise for you? The post above suggesting you monitor your fuel flow is a good one, based on what you find, how you are using the aircraft, you will have a better idea of what fuel flow to expect on future flights and can plan accordingly. IRL pilots also think in terms of endurance. With your own actual fuel flow findings, you can then determine endurance expectations and range as you use the aircraft. Hope that helps. Good flight planning!

You will generally get lowest fuel flow at 1600 rpm, although sometimes by so little that it’s hardly worth it, so I usually have the prop at 1750. Torque setting for either speed or endurance is, as Nikita has already said very much dependant on altitude and temperature. If you enjoy flying realistically you should download the Pilots Operating Handbook which contains the performance charts. I can’t provide a link but believe you will find it here on the forums.

From the POH…

At 10K

At 12K

At 14K…you get the idea

Tha k you all! I’m looking at the medium cargo 4-5hrs missions in career mode. High a d slow as well as low and slow with the C208B!

Greatest range will be achieved at high altitude (ie 20,000ft), and low power. Looking at the chart above as an example, at 1750rpm and -30 C recommended torque setting is 1255 Ft/lbs, with fuel flow of 275 PPH at 147 KTAS. The maximum recommended torque setting is at the top of the box 1761 Ft/lbs. It is important to factor in the effect of wind at height, as this will influence at what altitude it is most economic to fly.

These charts are real world and sometimes the in sim aircraft exhibit rather different speed and fuel burn characteristics, they are a great reference though and you will get used to any discrepancies.

Also as a footnote I think the charts shown are for the lower power Caravan? I believe the default model is the 208B EX with 867 Shaft Horse Power, but it is of little consequence to this discussion.
