Calibrate Your Sim - Rethinking Performance and Frame Generation

Hello folks.

For years across multiple self-built low and mid end PC’s, I’ve been using both versions of the simulator with Ultra-equivalent graphics and beautifully smooth, stutter-free performance. Countless videos out there depicting the best performance settings, how to gain more FPS, etc. and those can all help to a degree but as everyone knows there is no magic bullet that applies to all systems. Or is there? Almost.

Flight simulation is different from other forms of gaming from RPG’s, racing, first person battle, etc. in that movement of an airplane and the world around it is, in real life, smooth. Slow paced, even if you’re flying a fighter jet. So your entire experience requires smooth frame and display. But whether you are using a low end PC or the highest, synchronization is the key to smooth flying. This is where locking your sim’s frame rate correctly is important.

Realistically, no matter what system you are running, for flight simulation you need technically no more than 30fps. But monitors don’t go as low as 30Hz. Generally they minimum at 60Hz. Note: If you have a 120+ Hz monitor, even on high end systems, you realistically do not need 120fps for smooth flight simulation. So in many cases you can cut your monitor’s refresh rate down to 60Hz while simming.

Frame generation is a godsend, but if what it’s multiplying isn’t synchronized, those generated frames are going to amplify any microstutters and frame jumps. So below is how I’ve managed to be happily flying in these simulators on a low-mid tier system without stutters, lag, skips, etc., for years, with Ultra clouds and ultra-equivalent visuals overall, without scaling.

The Goal:

Find the correct FPS lock so your sim runs smoothly, your pacing stays stable, and frame generation doesn’t amplify stutters.

Before getting started, note your monitor’s refresh rate. Keep in mind the whole number, clean divisors of that number. So for instance, if the refresh rate is 60Hz, 20Hz, 30Hz, and 60Hz can all be multiplied by 3, 2, and 1 respectively to get 60Hz. 144Hz? 72Hz, and 36Hz are clean whole number divisors. Keep those numbers in mind as you go through this process.

  1. Start Clean

    Close MSFS.
    Clear your shader cache and rolling cache.
    Everything you do here is going to require a clean slate. Any time you change your graphics settings in the sim, it is best to clear your caches.

    Turn OFF any frame generation for now.

  2. Launch MSFS and stay at the main menu.

    Don’t load a flight yet.

  3. Set your graphics quality to TAA (or if you really prefer DLSS, set it at that. Whatever you think looks the best)
    Pick the highest settings your hardware can realistically handle.
    You don’t need Ultra everything unless you’re using large resolution like 4K.

  4. Load into a resource-heavy scenario.

    Busy airport + complex aircraft (PMDG, Fenix, etc.).
    Ensure the airplane is running fully with all systems. It’s best to be on a runway.
    Turn on your traffic, your weather, everything that you want to see when you’re flying.
    Let everything settle for a minute.

  5. Watch your FPS in Dev Mode

    Pan around with the camera from the pilot’s seat. Especially look toward very busy things like terminals and AI aircraft as you monitor the FPS. Expect stutters and such. Ignore them for now.

    You’re looking for the lowest number you see under the heaviest load you can give it, not the highest.

    Make your desired graphics and traffic, wx settings are set at this time. You can adjust them per the excellent settings guides available in the forums. As you make your changes, keep an eye on your FPS.

    Now let’s say you have a 60Hz monitor and your system is pumping out 51fps with all your settings the way you want them. That’s actually very good. But you can’t use 60fps as your max frame rate in the sim’s settings, it won’t put out 60. So your next lowest frame rate limit for your monitor’s refresh rate is going to have to be 30. If your FPS dips below 30 while you’re making these changes, reduce your settings until you never see it go below 30fps.

  6. Set your max frame rate.

    Once your visuals are the way you want them and you know where your framerate floor is, whether it’s half, a third or the full monitor refresh rate, set your sim’s max frame rate to that number. It is very important that you keep it in whole number factors. So if your refresh rate is 60, your floor should be a number that multiplies cleanly to 60, such as 30. Not 31, not 35, 30.

  7. Save your settings. Exit the simulator.

  8. Clear your shader and rolling caches AGAIN.

    The reason for this is your shader caches are going to be built based on the settings you were just adjusting and tweaking, so they aren’t “clean” caches and without clearing them, you will see artifacts and stutters and such, especially with frame gen (and especially if you’re using lossless).

    Also ensure your shader cache is set to Unlimited.

  9. Relaunch MSFS.

    Once you’re at the menu, you’ll see your frame rate at the limit you set, and “Limited by MainThread.”
    That’s good — it means the sim is intentionally holding that frame rate.

  10. Turn on frame generation (FSR, DLSS, LSFG — doesn’t matter)

    Set its target to your monitor’s refresh rate, or a multiplier that will target it to your monitor’s refresh rate. Not more, not less. So if you found that your floor is 30fps, and your monitor is 60Hz, your multiplier is 2x. If the best floor you can get is 20fps (like me for instance), your multiplier is 3x.

    Match the refresh rate.

  11. Load a flight and fly

    Now there are indeed other system factors that will affect your performance, such as ReBAR being off in BIOS, HAGS, and all those other system settings that we’ve all come to know about. It’s probably best to get those in order before going through this calibration. One thing to consider is that with higher multipliers comes with higher potential for artifacts and subtle blurring.

There are some tools out there that help with doing it, but they work on some systems while not on others due to the way some system security settings are. So I do it manually.

I don’t know how AMD cards are, but with the NVidia’s you first have to disable shader cache in the NVidia control panel as some of the shader cache files won’t delete with it enabled. So it usually goes like this:

  1. Open the Nvidia control panel (and perhaps the AMD’s have a similar setting in their control panels) and disable shader cache.
  2. Reboot your computer.
  3. Windows key + R and type %localappdata% and enter. It will take you to your user/AppData/Local folder.
  4. Find your Nvidia or AMD folder and go into it. Make sure the Nvidia one is not “Nvidia Corporation” (those ones are for the Nvidia app and if you have any saved settings in there, clearing those caches will remove those settings)
  5. You’ll find folders named DXCache, GLCache, and ComputeCache. Delete the contents of those folders but keep the folders there.
  6. On some systems you may additionally find similar caches in the user/AppData/LocalLow under the same NVidia or AMD folders (I think this is probably for Nvidia only). Clear the contents of those folders as well if there is any thing in there, including the ones in PerDriverVersion/DXCache as well.
  7. Then I like to go in and run the Windows Disk Cleanup and select Shader Cache in there, but usually by then there’s nothing in it but maybe 8MB or so, though sometimes 50MB or more.
  8. Your rolling cache is located in your main sim’s installation folder AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Limitless_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache and it’s just called ROLLINGCACHE.CCC. Delete that file. It’ll automatically build a new one on the next start of the sim.
  9. Remember to turn your shader cache back to Unlimited.

Thanks for this. However, now with Dynamic Frame Generation this seems less of an isse. My monitor is 75Hz. I set my sim to max 30 fps. And then use Dynamic Frame Generation with up to 3x FG to increase the fps to 72 fps. Works brilliantly.

@AuralunaOne Thank you very much for posting this Guide. I have followed this Guide multiple times very carefully, step by step. Here are the results.

My specs are,

  • Intel® Core™ i5-12600K Processor
  • ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX™ 5070 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition
  • Corsair VENGEANCE® RGB RS 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 DRAM Up To 3200MHz C16 Memory Kit

Settings are,

  • 3840 x 2160 (Anything less than that is a blurry mess on a 75" 4K TV)
  • TAA (DLSS causes blurriness in Glass Cockpits unless the camera is close to the blurry data)
  • HDR is ON
  • TLOD an OLOD set to 100 for testing
  • RT Shadows are ON. Anything other than that messes up all shadows.
  • All other settings are High or Medium. Textures are High. Clouds are the only setting set to Ultra.

So I have been testing this for a while now with traffic injection via SayIntentions AI but earlier today, during the “Manchester Real Ops” VATSIM event, I thought that was absolutely perfect scenario for testing as the airport was packed with VATSIM traffic. Here are the results,

So average FPS is 25. 1% Low was between 19 and 24. So I set the Max Frame Rate to 20, Frame Gen to 3x and I get 60 FPS but with some input lag.

As you may notice in both cases, the “Mainthread” hovers around 40ms. It just won’t go down in this case. Of course, if I spawn into a smaller airport without VATSIM traffic, I would get around 33ms. In both case, VRAM isn’t the issue.

The issue may be my CPU. If that is the case, there are 2 choices.

i. Purchase a higher end LGA 1700 CPU like 14900K

ii. Purchase everyone’s favorite 9800X3D (or better) but that would mean purchasing a new motherboard, DDR5 RAM, better CPU cooler.

My resolution is always 4K in which case the GPU does the heavy lifting.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t know that it’s your CPU honestly. Personally I don’t have the luxury of buying high end equipment so I haven’t ever tested it in 4K. My specs are as follows:

Intel Core i7 12700k (HAGS on, ReBAR on)
RTX3050 8GB (Single fan Asus edition) (Used Nvidia app overclock)
32GB DDR5 5600MHz
NvME installation drive
ASUS B760

Old system running MSFS2020 at 20fps:

Intel Core i7 4770
32GB DDR3 3200MHz
GTX 1650 Super OC
Don’t remember the MB but it’s an ASUS circa 2004

A few running addons (non-scenery/aircraft) that use SimConnect including the Alcyone DFD development unit, which currently requires Visual Studio to also be running (while it’s being developed).

I will say that under heavier loads I do indeed get some spikes into 30-40ms range on the mainthread, like while rolling cache is being updated with freshly downloaded info, thunderstorms for instance, but they don’t really introduce any input lag.

This may come down to your Memory actually, though I can’t say for certain. If your MB can handle the higher speed RAM I’d go with that before buying another processor. One thing I do do, though is I run my MSFS via a batch file forcing it to load with High priority. Now this doesn’t increase performance but it does help keep some scheduling cleaner and that could help a slight bit with input lag (I presume you’re referring to your controller(s)).

Because your CPU and RAM combination can occasionally delay MSFS’s input polling thread, running the sim with High priority helps ensure MSFS wins CPU scheduling fights against background apps.
