Can hear myself but not ATC

I can hear myself talking to ATC but their replies do not play over speakers, they do show up in the ATC panel. I have the following setup:

  1. User experience- “ATC voices” ON
  2. Sound- “Communications selection” Default (all audio through default speakers)
  3. Sound “Text-to-speech” Azure. If I switch to Windows offline I still hear only myself and no ATC (sounds like a little boy talking).
  4. Sound volume level “Voices” 100
  5. VHF signal degradation Off or On makes no difference.

This was intermittent a few days ago and now doesn’t work every flight. Off and on I hear the initial voice from ATC when the flight is beginning prior to selecting the “FLY” button. But nothing after that. Have rebooted a number of times to see if that would help as well but no change. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I’m impressed with this issue report @CPODuke. It is a hell of a lot better than “its broken” or getting angry.

It seems like it could be one of two things to me:

  1. You’re having the Azure voices issue. Windows voices don’t work for me, only Azure. More info below.
  2. You’re routing ATC through your comms sound path and game through the normal sound path. I’m assuming you can hear game sounds here.

The ATC sounds before hitting the fly button will be prerecorded. The fact that it is intermittent makes it tough to say much more. When you say “intermittent” do you mean

a. If the voice works it works for the whole session. But it may not work for another session.
b. It cuts in and out over a single session?

So, Is everything going through the default speakers? Like, you don’t split game your comms sound through a different path than your game sounds?

Are you using a bluetooth headset? There is a known issue with those. Though I use bluetooth and have no issues. Maybe it is bluetooth version dependent. If you have ATC going through the comms sound path then this would only affect ATC.

I couldn’t get my PCs default voices to work. Only Azure works for me. I think this was because I had a French voice installed that was #1 in my voices list but the voice itself didn’t work when tested in Windows. I cleaned it out but it still doesn’t work. Cleaning out was a hack though because Windows didn’t give an uninstall option for that voice so maybe it is still a Windows issue for me. I assume you tested your Windows voice using the Windows voice preview function?

Thanks for the reply, I have it set so all audio goes through the default audio device. They are speakers, all other audio plays fine. Will try my headset later to see if that makes any difference.

For intermittent I was referring to the prerecorded voices at beginning of the session. I hear sometimes, maybe 50/50.

During a flight ATC was also intermittent a few days ago, but last couple days I haven’t heard anything from them. Maybe the new patch will help things out.

this is probably not your case but i had some audio issues and it was only because my default audio on windows was on 5.1 config. not “stereo” so some sound were not playing normally.

Even if it doesn’t fix it that is an awesome idea and well worth a look.

Thank you, I have tried all suggestions on hear as well as other similar posts throughout the forums. Unfortunately no matter what I have done 100% of the time I hear my pilot talking, but no ATC or other AI aircraft. Tried:

  1. Various speaker setups for default speaker 2.1, 5.1 etc
  2. USB headset or external speakers
  3. Setting headset as default communications device and communication output in sound options. Same thing hear myself in headset and plane sounds on speakers, Kinda cool for immersion, but still no ATC or other planes.

Just leaving it on copilot ATC control now so I dont miss anything coming in and get dropped on a IFR, etc. Maybe game needs to be reinstalled, or perhaps the upcoming patch will help. Just been a little apprehensive to reinstall due to all those issues people were having with the installation. Plus I assume it will clear all my controller settings.

Thanks again for help.
