Can I check this isn’t just me?

Every single time I’ve started the sim since the day I bought it, with add-ons and without, when clicking launch I get the error message telling me ‘Warning; Your last session ended unexpectedly’ and that the sim didn’t shut down correctly, offering me the chance to start in ‘Safe Mode’. Every single time, even when it’s shut down just fine.

Is it just me? I’m surprised I can’t find any posts with the same problem!

msfs-2024

Just you I think. Not usual.

That’s very odd.

I wonder what’s causing it?

Check if you have running.lock file in %AppData%\Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024\ and delete it.

The path may be different for MS Store version but looks like you have it from Steam.

Thanks.

I did have that file and deleted it but it hasn’t cured the problem frustratingly. The message comes up on SU1, SU2 Beta with the community folder both full and empty

It’s got me baffled to be honest.

Exactly the same here; on my old gaming laptop, and now on my new rig as well… same thing over and over.

How do you quit FS2024?
Quit to Desktop?

I’ve had that rarely, and usually because the sim fell over for some reason, which again is rare for me. I’ve never seen that in 2024, but I did see it a few times in 2020. When the sim fell over it would fail to delete a file that it used to detect an unsafe shudown.

The file I was thinking of is called “running.lock”, and is in the “LocalState” folder, adjacent to “LocalCache”.

I assume that is possible in 2024, so I wonder if that file is left there for some reason, and is not being deleted on a successful shutdown.

I found an old post of mine about this:

Are there any files in that location in 2024 that look similar to “running.lock”?

Yeah, quit to desktop then wait for it to show as ‘stopped’ in Steam.

It’s not the worst bug in the world, it just baffles me that I can’t get rid of it.

@hobanagerik The running.lock file was there and I deleted it but the issue still persists. I can live with it, it’s not the end of the world.

not just you. like once or twice a week

If your just quitting to desktop, instead of using the ingame shut down, your not allowing the sim to sync with the cloud save.

It needs a few moments to do this, especially if you’ve done a lot of different things that need to be verified and saved.

Daft question, what’s the in-game shutdown then? Are we saying that returning to the main menu and selecting ‘quit’ is not the way to leave the game?

Bit of an odd design of that’s the case!

That’s the way I always quit out of it.

Select to quit from the main menu and then sit and wait for the steam page to show, and then sit and wait - watch the green or blue button at the bottom left - it always takes a little time to upload data to the cloud. Basically what ccrbc is saying - be patient while quitting until the Steam page is not connected to the cloud or the game - you will see the button change colour once it is complete and then you can switch Steam off too.

Also, only click to quit MSFS once, is you do it twice you will cause it to conk.

I have had the same issue every now and then. I have found that if you start it in safe mode it sometimes fixes the issue. I think its something to do with the Steam link Icon for me.
