Can Logitech Flight Throttle Quadrant be used as trim wheel?

Has anyone tried to do that?

I am using the B1 and B2 button for trimming. I don’t think you can use the axis for trimming.

It’s possible to use axes for trimming but not recommended because it induce problems when disconnecting autopilot.
Search on the forum, you’ll find plenty of posts about this point.

I have been using the third (otherwise called Mixture) leaver on my second throttle quadrant for trimming, for about 15 months. It is VERY sensitive, but with practice it has become extremely effective. You have to ensure that when you activate AP that you have the trim set to the “0” position. Then you will not have any difficulty when you disengage AP. I find it to be the best of the available options, since it gives me both large changes and very fine adjustments. It is the most effective when landing, as the fine trim adjustments make for very buttery landings, on a consistent basis.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Can you explain a bit more how you use it for trimming? There seems to be a problem. A trim axis needs to move up and down for trim up and trim down action. The Logitech quarant is built for one direction up from 0 to 100. Do you mean to move the lever to 50 as the starting position for 0 trim? But that seems to be inaccurate and cumbersome to do.

I agree with @PlumbGlue67. You want digital trim control else the AP and trim control will get out of sync. A digital trim wheel can feel like an analog control but the difference being that it just tells the sim to make a relative trim up or down rather than an absolute position.

i have an analog trim axis set up, it works mostly well
 caveats:

  1. since SU5 some planes have the axis reversed.
  2. you will need to set up a deadzone in the middle if you use autopilot, otherwise any ‘glitchiness’ from that axis will constantly mess with it. put the axis in the deadzone when in autopilot.

The problem with that is you always have to trim immediately after you disengage the AP unless you happen to need neutral trim. Most times you are turning off the autopilot would be in the approach I think. How does it go with that scenario?

There is a trim axis that ranges from -100% to +100%. Binding this one gives you the “0” neutral position at the mid point of travel of the lever. I have never had to reset or change this binding at all through any of the upgrades/updates that have taken place. It is essential, though, that you get used to leaving the lever at the mid point of travel at takeoff, since this is “takeoff trim” set point. You just have to get used to using the lever - large changes are easy - small, very fine control changes take a lot of practice.

 it isnt perfect. Since i made my trim wheel with a potentiometer i might rebuild it with an encoder so it will send pulses instead.

I think that’s a wise decision and fairly easy upgrade.
