Can somebody interperate my FPS & Task Manager readings?

Like a lot of you my performance has definitely dipped since SU9. I’m flying in VR only, but the screenshot below I was testing flatscreen on my 4K TV. I have the fps limited to 32 as I get much better and smoother VR performance that way, with MR enabled.

Because I’m capping the sim to 32 frames I assume I’m not putting that much stress on my system, which seems to be borne out by the task manager CPU/GPU usage and temps.

But both my main thread and GPU have renders around the 30 milisecond mark which seems really high.
I used to get about 26,000 GPU app and 15,000 CPU app on the OpenXR toolkit FPS counter.

These response times I have now seem really bad?

EDIT - Forgot to put in my system specs

10850k CPU
32GB 3200 mhz ram
3090 GPU
Sim installed on 2 TB Nvme drive
4K 60 Hz TV
Reverb G2

Your GPU rendering times are averaging 14.8 ms, not 30.

32 fps = 1/32 = 0.03125 = 31.25 ms

MainThread issues, only Asobo can truly fix those.

Reset to default VR setting and then slowly increase values and check performance, LOD is a killer, MR is hard on CPU. I can’t get good MR with my G2, 12900 + rtx3080ti, I use OpenXR without MR and range between 31 - 46 live weather, multiplayer etc.

Moved to #self-service:install-performance-graphics which is more appropriate :+1:

I was getting excellent MR prior to SU9, I had it locked at 31 fps with 150 Terrain LOD, with 100 sim render, 100 OpenXR developer render and 85 XR toolkit FSR 40 sharpening.
It was so smooth I didn’t get any artifacting from the MR once I took off, and just a little around the wing struts of my Cessna when taxiing to the runway.

Now it’s noticeably worse, and the MR drops down to 22.5 regurlarly even though I’ve lowered my Terrain LOD to 130.

Trying to work out what has nerfed it so much.

Ah gotcha, I thought the 32 ms was my GPU render time. That’s encouraging then, my card is working fine.

Am I right in thinking that if I bought a 4090 this year then, I would get zero percent improvement in MSFS as it stands becuase it’s my CPU performance that is holding me back?

Even though according to task manager, it’s only 20 percent utilised?

Yes. No need to upgrade gpu, wait for the next best awesome cpu

The next best CPU will be useless if the game is not optimized to use it .We have until August to see what performance improvements are coming unless there is a beta around the corner.

I’ve been playing around a bit. If I uncap my system at 4K ultra I get between 55 and 60 fps, my GPU is is between 98 and 100 and my mainthread gets killed. I can’t get over 60 fps in 4K even with a 3090, 10850k which seems pants. This is looking around airports with the drone cam, I haven’t tried flying yet, I don;t know if that will be more or less demanding.

Interestingly by far the single biggest killer for me is AI traffic, much more than Terrain LOD. If I turn that off my main thread improves and I can keep at around 58 fps average, with AI traffic on and variety set to high, it drops down into the 40’s and my main thread is permanently red.

I’m going to to reboot now and then try again with my frame rate capped at 32. I basically want a smooth, stutter free experience, which now seems to mean flying without any traffic, which kind of sucks to be fair but fngers crossed for Direct X12 and some optimisations…

Don’t worry performance is at it’s worst and it’s time for France to go on vacation, enjoy!

Yeah it does feel a bit like that. I’ve got it nice and smooth again now, but only by disabling AI traffic and lowering my terrain LOD to 125 which is really not what I wanted.

Without real traffic and real weather the sim doesn’t really feel feel so thye need to improve this.
