I want to fly both FSX and MSFS 2020 on the same computer. Is there anything wrong with having both programs loaded and flying them at different times?
Shouldn’t be
No problem.
A computer can have many programs that are similar, they do not conflict. If run at the same time you could get some problems though.
They have totally different install folders so they can co-exist just fine.
Shouldn’t be an issue at all.
Are you thinking the retail edition FSX or the Steam Edition, FSK-SE?
Seven7Tango. Thanks. That’s good to know. I have the original two disk Flight Simulator X Deluxe Edition and Flight Simulator X Acceleration. I installed with a lot of help from Microsoft Support, the MSFS 2020 Premium Deluxe Edition.
Buffy Foster,
Thank you very much for your reassuring words. I feel like it will be quite some time before 2020 has the add on aircraft and utilities that I have grown to like, so I am not ready to surrender flying in FSX just yet. I have no idea if VATSIM or IVAO is usable in 2020.
I have many, many aircraft in FSX and also in FS9 (2004) that are fabulous models. I still have a build that runs WinXP MCE loaded up with both FS9 and MS Combat Sim. I’m going to drag that out today and power it up. Fingers crossed it doesn’t go up in smoke!
RealSei,
Thank you for your answer. Good to hear. I only plan to run one program at a time.
I also am thinking of reinstalling fsx in a partitioned hard drive. Let me know if you had an issue. Thanks!
Glad I kept my FSX DVD’s. Wonder if I will have to run patch KB928080 to get it to install. Miss things working the way I expect them to. Have not been able to get VOR or IFR navigation working in anything. Cannot seem to get G1000 to work correctly in C172. Yeah, will admit rusty in VOR navigation, but watch some YT videos, tried to setup, and it sorta worked, but not like FSX. I will do this tonight, and report back here how it goes.
You might try running in compatibility mode, or setting up a Virtual Machine. The tools to get a VM up and running in the Windows 10 environment are quite nice.
The deluxe way to go would be an installation on a separate physical drive.
All - Steps to take to Load FSX back on System.
Download MS Patch FB928080 and save in separate folder you will need to unzip and run it before you reload FSX. It creates a folder on C:\MicrosoftKB928080. The files you want to run as admin in Command Prompt Window is resetsldl.exe. Once it runs successfully you can proceed. This fixes some error in the store.
Install FSX disc 1, let it finish, put in disc 02, and wait till game finishes loading, it will then open and ask for the product key, enter it, as it will check and allow you to finish install. Then and only after product key has been input, install SP-01, let it finish, install SP-02 let it finish. I rebooted system after that. FSX runs fine. It knew the settings and calibration for my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, with no tweaking of sensitivities or buttons. I was able to reload Virtavia C-17 and it works perfectly. No AP issues, no VOR issues, no issues at all. Unlike FS2020, having lots of trouble getting AP to even work, and flying VOR/IFR is almost impossible, planes are all over the sky. Cannot get the sensitivities set correctly in MSFS. All along I thought it was me. This new sim has lots of lets say issues.
As an aside, FS2020 GPU is running at 83C, in FSX running at 54C. Fans spin up good regardless. RTX-2070 with Intel I-7-9750 processor and 32GB ram. Yes, I get it, the graphics between them are like night and day. Wish all the systems on the planes worked like FSX, and also get the C-17, just a sweet plane to fly, easy, nothing to complicated, and the AP works perfectly.
Oh FSX takes about 15GB of HDD space.
Thanks for the great, detailed info. I’ll try it! Some of my favorite payware aircraft live in FSX.
Lenny,
I just used my FSX disks and reinstalled it. It is working fine. I have also reinstalled FS Commander 10.1, Google Earth, and REX Worldwide Airports. All are working just fine. So far though, I cannot get views to work very well in MSFS 2020.
I’ve been flying both sims almost daily. No issues at all!
No problem.
Works fine for me! I also still have FSX on my computer!
Joyless, that is good to know. I reinstalled FSX and now it is working too.
I run fsx fs2020 and xp11 on my computer separately all the time
