If the trackir software closes or crashes during the game it cannot be reconnected to so head tracking no longer works. This was in 2020 and is even more frustrating in 2024 due to the long initial load time.
Press win key and open the app “mouse emulation”. TrackIR kicks in after that again.

AFAIK that was the case within MSFS2020 and it still is in MSFS2024.
It became part of my personal ‘before start up sim’ checklist.
