Cannot Start Career

So I decided to jump into Career Mode today and it tells me to select an airport, but none of the airports I chose are selectable?

I saw a post saying Career Mode maintenance was happening, but that should have been done by 3:00 EST and it is almost 3:30.

You cannot start a career at every airport. Not sure what the exact criteria was, but I do not think you could select international airports for example.

Well so much for “Fly Anywhere”.

Well you can fly anywhere but not from anywhere it seems. At least not as a location to start your career from.

Let us hope they change that down the line. My “Pilot’s” home airport is LAX, but I was wanting to start career mode in France.

To be fair I have not even looked at the career aspect just yet - too many other issues with the sim including the career that I do not feel it’s worth investing time in the career right now.

Yeah. There is stuff they need to work on force sure, but my plan is to be a VIP Pilot. Pretty basic mechanics. Probably not too different from Free Flight.

sympathy…
VIP missions have the most bugs =)

Yeah? Interesting. What issues?

UPDATE:

I cannot start the Career from KLAX or KJFK or KLGA or any other place I want to start in. This is ridiculous. Only places that seem available are airports no one has probably even heard of. I know I haven’t. So I guess I am not doing career…at least for the time being.

most of us commercial pilots started at small often grass strips. I like that feature. Our careers often didn’t begin where we would like, but we simply worked our way up and out to larger airports.

This is by design. When starting out gaining a PPL in a single prop, you wouldn’t be flying out of LAX.

This adds an air of realism to career mode. In real life you would be flying out of flying club airfields.

You can fly from LAX or anywhere in free flight but career mode needs a ladder to climb otherwise it would just be free flight.

Fair.
So you mean to say you can change your home airport down the line?
Does that also mean I cannot use whatever plane I want for Charter Pilot?

Yeah. Home airport doesn’t matter if youre working as an employee as you can pick flights from anywhere (for aircraft specific to your type rating).

It does comes into play when you own a company. For example if you have an 172 based at a particular airport, you will only be able to fly missions that start and end from that airport. To fly a mission that starts and ends at a different airport, youll need to transfer your plane there. Typically this doesnt cost much, its usually a few hundred credits if its within 100-300 miles. If youre moving it to the other side of the world however, it can be considerably more but still only up to a few thousand credits.

For the aircraft - with each type rating, you will unlock the aicraft specific to that type. For example, if you were to complete the tailwheel endorsement, you would get access to the taildraggers such as the Cub X Crafter.

Each mission then has a specific aircraft, even missions within the same category. So, Flightseeing for example, one mission may require a 172, while another one may require a Cub X. Its really specific to the mission.

Things get a little more complicated when it comes to Heavy Airliners. Typically, you’ll start in the Boeing 737 Max, and eventually Airbus missions will open up.

I just want to be able to fly planes like the Grand Caravan, CJ4, and Longitute. The Sky hawk sucks, especially in rough weather, and I cannot turn turbulence off in career mode.

Come in for a landing, lined up perfectly, reduced throttle, hit flaps, touch down, apply brakes speed drops below 40…and the Skyhawk keeps going and going and going and going off the runway, and going and going, into the bush, oh look crash. I cannot press the brake button any harder than I am.

Pretty sure I broke the button on the last landing. Good thing I have a second controller.

And I have like 30 missions available and they are literally the Skyhawk. Every last one of them. I would have preferred being stuck with a hot air balloon over this garbo plane.

Well you need to grind to get those certifications and planes. You start out bush and with GA Single Props. I’ll agree with the 172 not handling well in turbulent air but that’s how the aircraft is in real life as well. I’m actually enjoying starting slow and being forced to use the 172 (typically I’m TBM or Kodiak Quest 100), the 172 handles really well actually if you trim it out and use proper approach speeds.

If you come flying into the airport at 80kt+, you’re going to blow out the runway, especially if you’re hopping and skipping when touching down. My brakes work perfectly fine with the 172, so I’m not sure what you’re doing wrong. I will say that while the Beechcraft G36 is enticing because it’s much faster, I’ve run into nothing but issues with that plane… My head sticks out the top of the aircraft, the passengers and hanging out the back, it doesn’t taxi for ■■■■, IDK what they did to the windshield but in mine it’s super bright and washed out. I legit have lost ratings by using that aircraft so I definitely say to avoid that aircraft at all costs until they fix it. Grind out missions in the 172, it’ll make you a better pilot.

If you’re blowing out the runway in a 172, perhaps sticking with this aircraft is the best move for you. You should be coming in for landing at 60kt in the 172 with 3/4-full flaps.

Like I said, I am below 40 long before the runway ends and it just keeps going. It’s like I am not even hitting the brakes when I have an indentation in my thumb from pressing the button so hard. Granted it’s usually 5+ knot wind when this happens, but if the wind is strong enough at that low to roll the plane off the runway when it’s not even blowing towards the direction you are rolling, then they need to fix the wind.

I do not mind starting small, but when I have to apply 70% throttle just to get the plane moving cause the game starts me in the middle of a field that is just annoying cause then the plane blows past the roll on to the runway even when I reduce throttle and apply brakes.

I much, much prefer turboprop or jet planes to single engine propeller planes. That being said, I have like 40 plus First Flight missions and I still cannot use the other planes I unlocked. You shouldn’t be bound to the Skyhawk when you have other planes available to use.

What airport did you start at? I was try to start from Morristown Municiple, NJ

I haven’t started a career, the sim is too buggy, unreliable and does not perform fluidly enough in VR for me to really enjoy it.

I started in some airport out of Bordeax France. I have not had issues with Career…so far aside from trying to fly in 30 knot wind with a Skyhawk. -.-
