CAS J3 Cub *Released 6/13/24* *Marketplace Release 9/12/24*

I use custom view 1 for my reset, and have next/previous views on stick and yoke setups where I have from 1-7 custom views depending on aircraft. I wonder if I set a control alt custom view after getting there. That way I can go to my pop up taxi peek one click up or right to the prop one click down. Don’t really need any other views for a cub. On your tweaked views I just hit control alt 1 from the default, maybe only one other time was I ever good to go with the default view for life size on a 55 with head tracking.

Yeah, what they are saying above is that next and previous instrument view commands will not work and do nothing unless you are already in a instrument view, normally that would be instrument view 1. This why some people didn’t know that the A key did anything.

CONTROL 1 = Instrument view 1
A = next instrument
SHIFT A = previous instrument

CONTROL 0 = instrument view 10 which is standing in front of the prop

jump back inside to default view is
CONTROL SPACE
or F
(either one).

I don’t use any of those key presses because all of these commands are on a hat on my flightstick. Because I use them all the time. So I had to look up the key presses since I never use them.

another way to return to the cockpit : press CTRL+1 (or whatever number to view the various aircraft exterior position) then press the same combo again to return to the cockpit. No need to change keys or use the spacebar

Well setting it as a custom camera works.

I use ‘reset’ as set custom camera 1 (pilot adjusted natural normal head position for head tracking as custom 1).

So my ‘default’ is the saved control+alt+1
I have one higher ‘taxi’ on the Cub for parking control+alt-2
Then went to control-0 to the outside prop view, hit control+alt+3. Well I zoomed it out a touch to get it off the top icon bar.

Hat is up/down next/previous custom camera. So in cockpit click the hat down to the prop or click up to the taxi. Done and done. Some planes I have 7+ views including passenger seats, avionics, pop-up taildragger views, right hand seat, whateva. Usually set my two highest priority alt views as #2 and whatever the highest # is so those are up/down first click on the hat.

So switch everything on, prime, one hat click, swing the prop, click right back in and away you go.

Having a blast with this plane. A strong headwind is the J3 worst enemy. I am currently stuck in a strong headwind :upside_down_face:

LOL. I had an experience with the Optica. Approaching Las Vegas for some sightseeing and noticed my ground track on LNM moving backwards. I thought “What the heck?!”

Found out I was fighting a 60 knot headwind.

At idle, it does take a pretty long time. The Cub I fly most these days has a tuned C-85 that puts out near 100hp, and when you pull the fuel shutoff you’ll sit there for whole minutes at idle, unless you run it up. I tried it in the CAS cub and it felt pretty good; engine stopped quickly once run up a bit.

I’ve flown this plane a couple times in the sim now and I’ve gotta say, I’m impressed. Like every other taildragger in the sim (minus some of CCM’s mods, as far as I’ve seen) it lacks the directional instability / ground loop behavior of its real life counterpart, but other than that, darned if it doesn’t remind me of flying a Cub! Highly worthwhile for some pure stick and rudder fun. I’ve tried it in some places I’ve flown Cubs; now I’m going to have to revisit “Flight of Passage” and try out a couple of their more memorable legs. Good times!

Great to hear this sort of approval from a real-life Cub driver!

I was wondering if you could chime in on one issue that bugs me a little, to see if this is accurate: when flying at low altitude on days with high wind speeds, I find that thermals push the Cub up so much that I have to fly with a 20-30 degree down-angle just to maintain altitude. In this case I mean the angle between the underside of the wing at the tip and the horizon when I look out of the cockpit window. If I don’t do that I’ll be pushed up many hundreds of feet per minute.

I’m flying at about 70 mph IAS with something like 160 lbs of pilot weight and 60 lbs (I think, the lowest allowable in the tablet at any rate) of passenger weight.

Is that behaviour at all accurate? Am I doing something wrong? Or is it maybe just MSFS 2020 being silly with how it simulates thermals?

I’ve had similar experiences occasionally with other planes, but it would seem to be much more pronounced with the Cub.

A Cub is very effective at thermaling, with that fat, flat-bottomed, lowly loaded wing. So getting knocked around and pushed up in thermals is realistic. As far as how much, I’m guessing you’re seeing some over-exageration of the effect because MSFS turbulence, on “realistic”, isn’t very realistic. I run on medium usually, but I’ve not had this Cub up in rough conditions yet so I can’t say for sure. But I’ve definitely seen times in the real airplane where it feels like I’m shoving the nose down and still going up. The Stearman can do that too, just like a lot of older GA airplanes that were intended to fly low and slow.

Thanks a lot for the input! Good to hear that it’s not the Cub that’s behaving incorrectly. That’ll help me keep the frustration down next time this happens in the sim

I’ll also try running on medium next time, that’s a good tip!

Yeah, some people run medium or low, really comes down to personal preference and is also affected by any other add-ons you use that have their own air effects, like FS Realistic, Active Sky etc.

There’s a book about a real event about two teenagers who flew the Cub across USA in '66. Flight of Passage: A Memoir - by Rinker Buck

Excellent book! I read it twice.

I read it long ago.
I remember, the thing they were most scared about was not knowing how to pronounce Tucson, haha.

Hi,

Just tried the J-3 with the EDO floats. What a joy to fly with the Cub off some lakes in Austria on a beautiful calm morning! Bravo CAS for this welcome addition! :+1:

Will there be anchoring and paddling features, like in the Got Friends Wilga or the A2A Cub back in the day?
