Changing Altitude Etc

Please excuse my ignorance (old age) but when i try to increase or decrease altitude etc
i get a complicated sytem and not just a turn of the knob.
Any help would be much appreciated

In what aircraft

For a typical autopilot you can set the altitude knob and enable, then enable vertical speed VS and set your rate of climb. Or enable and set VS first to initiate your climb/rate, then choose the altitude, then enable ALT(although some aircraft toggle VS off when you do that), Or of course manually climb then enable ALT where you’re at(if you’re not already in AP) ,for the cookie-cutter versions of it… Of course there are way more sophisticated ways of doing it in complex aircraft.

Hello and welcome after while,

if i could be little bit like I’m, simply with change of flight altitude some required things need to be known to not do mistake. What altitude I want, how much I want change/to get there to that altitude and of course if I need ascent or descent. With this criterias are all defined, simply said. No only knob is enough, type of aircraft is simply required to differ things.

Yup, some aircraft don’t even have VS in the autopilot, some are wonky, like the Mooney where the VS is fussy(buggy) or the 337 where it’s nowhere near the other AP settings. Some aircraft can have the entire flight plan programmed in first altitude, speed and heading(s). It makes a difference what you’re flying. Even some aircraft without ‘autopilot features’ on the panel can be bypassed by game hotkeys.

Just to explain a little further so that you know what I am trying to say.
A320 neo if I want to change altitude setting I select the knob which turns blue, I then press and get selections which I am finding very dificult to use.
Is there any settins where the altitude etc van be changed by just turning a knob.

In very basic terms, when you are using autopilot to hold or change altitude, there are two functions you need to interact with - the altitude setting, and how to get there. If you set the altitude to 15,000 for example, the plane won’t just climb to 15,000 until you select how you want it to change altitude, since there are multiple ways to change altitude. One simple way is VS or Vertical Speed mode. So if you are at 10,000 and want to climb to 15,000, you would set 15,000 altitude, then engage VS mode and enter something like +2000, which tells the airplane to climb at a vertical speed of 2000 feet per minute, until it reaches 15,000 feet.

Autopilot is a pretty complex utility especially in airliners since that is the primary way they are flown. I highly recommend learning how to use autopilot holistically, even if you are just sticking to the default aircraft. And I’d also recommend starting with something like the Cessna 172 to learn the basic principles of autopilot since it is very simple.
