Changing AP altitude and needing to use VS mode

In the many hundreds of hours I’ve logged in FSX, I don’t ever recall needing to change to VS mode EVERY TIME I wanted to change AP altitude. I would set the AP altitude to 10,000, engage Alt Hold, and the plane would climb (or descend) to 10,000. If I then wanted to descend to 6000…I would just dial the AP altitude down to 6000 and it would descend.

In 2020 however, in every aircraft I have tried so far (all of the Cessnas, King Air, 747, etc) it behaves completely differently. If I dial in 10,000, and engage the Alt Hold, it instantly changes my setting to whatever the current altitude happens to be. I need to change the mode to VS hold, set a VS, and while its climbing or descending set my new Altitude. Once at that altitude it will hold, but when I need to change altitude its the same thing: I need to change to VS hold, THEN set a VS (every time), and THEN set my new Altitude.

I guess the question is, was FSX accurate or is 2020?

I find AP in the glass cockpit Cessna very easy. Select AP. Set the altitude you want. Make sure your throttle is up to the job for the climb then press FLC. The plane then climbs to the required altitude and sticks there.

For descending reduce the throttle and select your altitude and again press FLC. It will not climb or descend if your throttle is not right as the AP does not control the speed, the pilot does.
