I’m good. What I did fixed my issue. Just thought it might help others.
ISSUE DESCRIPTION
Description of the issue:
For the past 2 days, when launching the sim, it would get stuck at the Checking for Updates screen for up to 15 minutes before I decide to force quite the sim and try again. I’ve been using the sim for the past 2 months several times a week, and this was never an issue. I haven’t installed any new add-ons in the past 2 days, only updated add-ons like Fenix, PMDG, and GSX Pro.
I have the Steam version of MSFS 2020 and it is fully updated as of the time of writing.
I have also attempted all the suggestions here: https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/4407168022418-How-to-get-past-the-Checking-for-Updates-screen
[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?
Yes, I tried this. Made no difference.
FREQUENCY OF ISSUE
How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?
Every time I launch the sim. Eventually, after a 5-7 force-quits, it will work.
REPRODUCTION STEPS
Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:
- Launch the sim.
- Spinning wheel at Checking for Updates screen. Screen is not stuck, but will not proceed to loading screen.

This just started happening to me today.
MSFS2020 launched correctly for the first time, then I had a CTD after about 5 seconds on the World Map, and it won’t launch since then. Tried all the “fixes” suggested, to no avail.
Edit:
I disconnected my Ethernet cable on that screen and MSFS2020 is now loading. Will update if/when it loads.
Same on me. I have Steam version of MSFS 2020 and started to stuck on checking for updates since today (11JAN25) afternoon European time.
Seems like server issue again!
Same here, eventually the checking for update screen timed out, MSFS launched with Marketplace greyed out and immediately crashed.
I am having the same issue. I loaded to the main menu went AFK and returned to find the sim had crashed. Since then the simulator has not gone past the splash/loading screens.
Same here , bugged and then stuck on update at relaunch
Same here in Slovakia. I restarted the startup many times and msfs still checks for updates and after a long time MSFS was immediately master of CTD. Terrible experience with Microsoft. I will not buy 2024…
I managed to get in after disconnecting my internet on the Check for updates screen and reconnecting it after clicking on the warning message.
Will try to launch a flight now.
Edit:
And CTD when trying to select a livery in the World Map view.
Same here in France
Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. You all broke 2020 again. Congrats.
Looks like I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue…
Same here, in Czechia. Seems to be a global issue…
EDIT: Infinite Checking for updates. When discinnection from the internet, able to get to the home screen. After reenabling the connection, CTD after a while. Must be a server issue.
Already being discussed elsewhere.

For real, I would love an explanation with some substance detailing what broke, why it broke, what you all did to break it, and what you are doing to fix it. Not just the vague “we have fixed it” silliness. If I take my car to the shop, I expect the same from my mechanic.
Yup, it usually takes 10-15 minutes checking for updates. It’s so annoying that this hasnt been fixed yet.
But today, its not loading at all. Servers seem to be down or something. Hopefully when they fix it, they’ll fix it taking forever to check for updates.
I’m used to just a minute or less of CFU when there are no actual updates. This is new to me, this spinning circle of trash. Azure is great
UK. MS Store Version. Got passed the “Checking for updates” then loading screen 60-70% CTD.
MS / Asobo:
give us a possibility, to bypass this annoying “checking fur updates” stuck stituation.
We have purchased MSFS 2020 to use it on our schedule, not on yours!
Neither will I!
