Choice of plane for circumnavigation of world

Hi all,

I am really keen to start by world tour but am struggling with which plane to use for it. I do have some preferences but am keen to know what others have used.

I want to avoid jets and keep it to single engine if I can.
I don’t want something too slow, but with a bit of speed behind it.
Also, only one plane or has anyone done this switching them up a bit?

Thanks

The TBM is nice because it does fast and high as well as low and scenic.
Can land almost anywhere, too.

I have crossed the Atlantic via Iceland and Greenland in it, so I imagine you can go all the way without “cheating”.

I have flown around the world in the TBM and DA62… any will do

I took part in Aerosoft’s ‘Around the Worl in 80 days’ in the JF Piper Arrow which is certainly possible to do IRL but would take ages as you’d have to wait for suitable weather. I have to admit that in the sim I flew in weather that you wouldn’t do IRL. A better option would the JF Turbo Piper Arrow or the Milviz Cessna 310. If I did something similar again I’d choose the 310. By the way I spent over 181 hours in the air, and did 22,047nm - so a more powerful aircraft like the 310 would shorten that.

TBM gets my vote, too!

Edit: I see you’re on Xbox so you won’t be able to use the Mugz improvement mod or the updated WT G3000. But… I’d still vote TBM.

Did it in a Beechcraft Baron, but I couldn’t cross the Pacific ocean…had to go up
and across the Bering strait.

FI Spitfire is a great one to use, done it twice in that:

For the Seven Conmtinents route I used a mix of DC-6, FI P-38 and the SWS Kodiak:

I hopped over the volcanic islands from Japan (Kuril) right through to the Aleutian Islands to Alaska. However I later found that one of the airports I landed at had been abandoned by the US about 12 years ago… :face_with_thermometer:

Thanks all for advice. After trying out a few planes tonight, i am leaning towards the piper seneca v. Not single engined but ticks many of other boxes.

How much time and patience do you have?

I’m doing this, and ended up changing planes depending on how long I wanted to fly a specific route, bit the Kodiak is one of my favorites for this.
It’s a fantastic way to discover our Planet.
Cheers!

Hondajet is a great jet for that.

Thats part of the challenge! Timewise, in no rush but patience is another thing

Also depends how you fly it as well e.g. Hand flying with live weather or autopilot and a preset etc.

I did one orbit in the Spitfire with live weather throughout, no navigation/AP but free choice of time of day. Lots of flight planning, dead reckoning throughout limited each leg to about three hours as I found it hard work. Failed a few legs due to weather and flew them again when weather improved.

Im going to do a mixture of hand flying and AP and in live weather. Dont really want to be restricted to real time so will change that up

Canada to Greenland can be tough in a piston engine without much airframe deicing equipment.

Also leaving the beauty of Iceland can be hard once you get there.

I’d recommend loading up on Iceland and Greenland 3rd party content.

I prefer turboprops for this kind of mission, and have completed an RTW with the TBM. For fun, I also did 3/4 of an RTW using GotGravel’s Vertigo (VL-3 with a PT-6). My second tier choice would be a Turbodiesel which holds performance all the way to service ceiling, so that would be the DA-62X with the TommyMxr mod.

It might be a painfully long time, especially if flying real time weather, but the Sting S4 could be fun.

I did my circumnavigation in the TBM. Great speed for long hops but can slow down for low-level sight-seeing, can go to FL31, the WT G3000 makes navigation a breeze.

Sorry to jump into this thread, but I need a plane recommendation for my upcoming world tour. I would like something that is efficient, have autopilot, have a great view and be a single engine that someone could afford IRL. I mean, my goal is to do something realistic and I feel like a Bonanza can be a bit too expensive IRL for someone who want to do a world tour vs a Cessna 172. I will mostly do 3-5h flight from Canada, to Greenland, to Iceland, etc.

I tried the VL3 because of its retractable gear, but it doesn’t have autopilot. I also can’t see how to manage mixture, I feel like it’s always in the red even with 20% throttle.

I’m open to freeware, payware or anything.

Thanks!
