Just started on the CJ4 after a lengthy spell in the TBM930.
Looking for tips etc to smooth things out a little
It seems to need very little power - the “Cruise” mark on the quadrant is miles off and results in overspeed?
When ATC says “keep speed not above 210” - i couldn’t get it below - is that where the speed-breaks come in?
On my one successful landing so far, I was coming in with a serious angle of attack and could not really see anything, is there a ‘best procedure’ anywhere?
Any tips most welcome - there is very little on this plane on YouTube as they focus on the WT mod version but thats not on X-Box yet.
It climbs like a rocket and it took a while to master landings. I found you need to bleed off some speed before touching down or else I had a tendency to bounce back up in the air. Try to using the “landing view” while in the cockpit (spacebar if you have a keyboard connected) when on approach to help with visibility.
I hope WT eventually releases the mod for Xbox. It’s a very complete plane with the mod.
I don’t recall a lot of stall warnings, but yeah, you do need some speed while landing. I think the avionics have settings to show your calculated approach speed (speed bug) on the PFD which helps avoid that.
I don’t know if WT added that option only for the mod or if it’s available on the stock version, too.
Unfortunately on Xbox we don’t have the luxury of the WT mod CJ4.
The stock CJ4 model is not very good - difficult to fly well, awkward to configure. I believe WT have made some changes to the stock flight model, so it’s improved but the FMS on the stock model is incomplete and practically useless - WT’s modelling of the Rockwell Collins Proline 21 makes this jet a joy to fly. Without it? Well on Xbox I much prefer flying the Hjet for now - and I have my fingers crossed we get an updated stock CJ4 with all the WT mods. For now though the stock CJ4 stays in the hangar…
I suspect that your throttle calibration is way off.
Although the cruise detent is a little high and tends to give you an overspeed warnings sometimes, you will be on the safe side with setting the throttle to around 85% N1.
With a correctly calibrated throttle there is no problem, slowing down the airplane without using the speed brakes. At 200 kts you can drop the flaps to 15° and this will slow down the plane even more.
On final you should be at flaps 35° and around 110 to 120 kts (depending on your weight). In this case you should touch down at around 105 kts. When you are configured like this there should not be any serious angle of attack so you should be able to see the runway without any problem.
i’ll try some more but it may be worth hanging on for the WT version before getting in too deep.
I can go back to my TBM or even the DA62, both were great planes.
I don’t want to buy any 3rd party planes until i see how SU10 is going to stabilise things, thats why i’m sticking with the stock stuff and vanilla FS install.
It’s my favourite aircraft in MSFS but it did take a little while to get the hang of it - no way I can yet say “master it”! Not called a pocket rocket for nothing and cilmbs like a homesick angel almost all the way to it’s ceiling. As such throttle control is vitally important, no autothrottle here, so once you’ve got the flaps/gear up throttle back to “climb” and watch that speed. If you need to level out (ATC for example) throttle it back as soon as you are level. POH says max throttle only allowed for max of 5 mins per flight.
For the descent plan well ahead and reduce speed early, flap limiting is quite high so that helps. You shouldn’t really need the speedbrakes until you are on the ground.
Good Utube by Filbert Flies - okay he’s using the WT version but principles remain. In all honesty this is an autopilot plane, hand flying it is a real challenge.
My advice for the default CJ4 on Xbox is try it, but it will be replaced by the Working Title refresh ‘soon’ (likely ‘this year’). They are working on refreshing other avionics too: the WT Garmin G1000 NXi is replacing the Asobo G1000 as default in the sim as of SU10 (to be final release soon), and they are also refreshing the G3000 and CJ4. I recommend joining (or reading) the Working Title Simulations discord channel, where they discuss the CJ4 and they have links to documentation (ie, how to fly it).
Here’s a great video of flying the CJ4 mod with Matt Nischan of WT - it’s from over a year ago, and I believe they have add a lot of functionality since.
I agree on the above video. It’s long (over 2 hours), but you’ll get a lot of info out of it.
The CJ4 is the most “solid” of the business jets, IMO. Once the G3000 gets updated (another “sometime this year” schedule) and the routing bugs fixed, then I’ll re-evaluate.
Yeah the Rockwell Collins P21 in the CJ4 requires a learning curve, but the WT documentation is great.
Two others to consider would be the Honda Jet, which I believe modelled their own G3000, but will use the WT G3000 once that version is default in the sim (for planes that have G3000).
Another I want to try is the Citation Longitude with the G5000 (which I believe WT is refreshing as well…)
Yes, I fly the HondaJet and the Longitude as well. The former is $25 on the FS Marketplace. It will have a major update next Thursday which will fix a few bugs, but it is already a great aircraft. The Longitude is also awesome, with Autothrottle, super long range, and speed. I cycle between these three planes quite a bit; they each have their own appeal. The bugginess in the G3000/5000 routing is the biggest pain, but should be fixed “later this year”.
Honestly I’ve avoided the default models of these because of odd behaviour of the avionics, and knowing the WT versions are coming is something I’m looking forward to.
