Cloned SSD, FS2020 won't start now

Hi, I have FS2020 (physical disc version) installed on a separate 256 SSD (drive G). The SSD was almost full so I cloned it to a 500Mb SSD. Windows loaded fine and could see the drive (still G). Went to disk mgt and extended the portion so I now have c200GB free space.

However when I try and launch FS I get the error “Microsoft Flight Simulator can’t open because it is offline. The storage device might be missing or disconnected.”

The drive is accessible, I’m connected to the internet and have Disc 1 of FS in the dvd drive.

Google has lots of things but mainly linked to xbox and ms store. I’ve followed some of them:

  • updated all apps in MS Store

  • ran WSReset

  • Reset gaming services

  • Repair & Reset xbox app

Is the install integrally linked to the original SSD? Do I need to somehow tell windows or the FS Server that there’s a new SSD?

Am I going to have to do a re-install form the disc and reinstall everything (which would be very painful lol)?

Any help really appreciated.

Unless someone has a better idea, maybe try a new install but then abort it after it started copying files into the chosen directory.
Rename the original one first of course. Then after the abort copy the files from the org directory into the new one.

Thanks, do you know exactly which folder I should be copying? I have FS202 installed on it’s own drive ‘G’.

I don’t know the file structure on your system, and MSFS certainly does spread things around a lot more than previous versions.
There is something that is installed on the C:\ partition in any installation as I understand it, some of that goes into your user account…
And then there is the main portion which consists in my installation of the folder Official and a folder Community.
These two in my case reside in a Folder MSFS and that is what I would rename and then later copy back.

But again…I have not done this with MSFS but with FS9 and FSX in similar fashion.

Run an install of MSFS and when it gets to the point of identifying the drive (C:) by default, change it to your G: drive. It should install a few misc files but then recognize your G: installation as the Sim Drive. When I updated SSD that is what I had to do. The difference between what you did and what I did was I simply copied the MSFS folder over to the new drive, I did not clone it. When I went to launch it, it said it needed to install it.
