For Beta testers and others that heve to disable their Community folder !
You do NOT have to MOVE the folder just rename it, then MSFS will make an empty Community folder on startup !
I’ve been flying this sim since it first launched and long ago stopped bothering to do anything with my Community folder for updates, Beta flights or hotfixes.
Your mileage may vary.
*(but I do firmly endorse using MSFS Add-Ons Linker to manage and control which aircraft, liveries and sceneries get loaded for any given sim session).
please note that not all addons are managed by the AddonLinker, e.g. ORBX…since they have their own folders and are just linked to the community folder
You can actually set up orbx to install the products into custom library folders outside of the community folder. It’ll then add symbolic links to the community folder but you can safely remove them and setup addon linker to use the orbx library folders and then you can enable/disable them like normal. That’s what I do and I’ve not had any problems.
Create a shortcut on Desktop for the community folder. Then create a folder named “Community Folder Backup” again on desktop. Then before updates, just copy the contents of the CF to the backup folder, then you can leave the original empty until all the updates are done or install the beta. No need then to reinstall anything, once done. Just copy back into the CF from the backup folder.
This also allows at least one backup of the many things you might have in the CF, instead of them all be hither and yon in various folders in case of Reinstall.
One caveat, in the case of PMDG 737, usually prior to after a SU update to the sim, they release an update. I sometimes just uninstall the planes and then reinstall the whole thing to make sure its complete with the new MSFS Update. I may be more worried about the SU update than many, but they have broken my sim many times. I don’t have more than 4-6 things in CF period.
That’s what I do, except not on the desktop. I create the backup folder right next to the packages folder, which in my case is D:\FS Packages. It only takes seconds to move stuff across.
But your SSD will not get better by copying stuff all the time forward and backwards.
Renaming the Com folder is the best was imo.I would have to copy 2230 folders each time(and growing)
I assume that was a reply to me, the forum software doesn’t make it clear.
A couple of points: firstly, nowhere did I say it was an SSD. Secondly, I said I moved the files, not copied them; copying them would be quite pointless.
Thirdly, and most importantly, if it’s on the same drive, when you move (not copy) files, no data is physically moved; only the path is modified.
Ahem, should be ‘directory’. Semantics. But to the OP, appreciate the helpful post but I think by now it’s common knowledge. Appreciate the desire to help others though!
