Hello everybody! Since the STOL (Short takeoff and landing) version of the ATR 42-600 was released, like 8 days ago, I’m still trying to figure out how to actually use it for STOL operations, as by the time I have only been able to operate it like the normal version of the aircraft. Let me explain:
The ATR 42-600S, according to what ATR said in the introduction video of the aircraft (you can find it on YouTube, in the following link: The Science Behind the ATR 42-600S STOL), it has the following characteristics differing it from the original version:
-
For takeoff, you can use flaps at 25º position, and if needed, increase the engine power to the ATR 72 setting. This means that the ATR 42 will use the same power than the ATR 72 for taking off and therefore reducing the runway distance down to 800m.
-
For landings, you can deploy spoilers in both wings symmetrically, using them as lift dumpers and therefore reducing the necessary runway distance for landing.
-
Last but not least, the rudder’s range of movement and size are supposed to have increased in comparison with the original ATR 42-600 for higher maneuverability at lower speeds.
My issue is that I’m still trying to figure out how to config the aircraft for STOL operations since I don’t know how nor where to switch from the ATR 42 power setting to the ATR 72, and neither where to configure takeoff for flaps 25º setting. If I try to perform takeoff in this flap configuration, the takeoff config alarm goes off and I get an alert at the ECAM saying “FLT CTL”. However, if I move the flap lever back to the 15º position the alarm stops and the alert disappears.
In what landing regards, I’m still trying to figure out how to deploy the spoilers symetrically as I haven’t found yet a switch nowhere in the cockpit, and I have neither found any page or something on the MCDU to configure the aircraft for STOL operations. I tried to land at short runways, applying full reverse and brakes and spoilers still don’t deploy.
If somebody knows how get all these configured, I’d be so grateful if somebody told me as I really want to know how to operate this aircraft for what it was made for!
Thanks in advance.
Kindly, Mario.
