Constant "power surge on USB port" message. No idea what to do

Hi all, appreciate any help here.

I’ve been using a PXN-2113 joystick. Windows 10. Never had any problems until a couple weeks ago when I started getting constant error messages “Power surge on USB port” and then the joystick completely stops working/connecting. Looked around online and someone suggested I order a USB hub and plug the PXN in there…did that, worked perfectly for a week, now back to the same error message. Was working fine this morning and then suddenly this afternoon back to the errors.

Tried re-downloading the joystick driver, that didn’t work.

I am functionally computer illiterate. Anyone know what’s going on? How to solve? Is the joystick itself the problem and I need to buy a new one?

I have an Alienware Aurora R8, i5-9400, CPU 2.90GHz, 16GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. Bought back in 2019. Perhaps I need a new machine?

Thank you!

Does this happen with every usb port or just one? Do you have another PC to try the joystick on (like a friend’s PC)? Was the USB hub that you ordered powered? Did it have it’s own wall plug?

Basically you need to figure out if it’s the joystick or the usb ports. If it happens with other peripherals, then I would hazard a guess that it’s a problem with your motherboard. If it is just the joystick causing the issues, then it is probably the joystick at fault.

“Was working fine this morning and then suddenly this afternoon back to the errors.” Could be a heat issue with your system, I have seen it before with other Dell PCs.

This article from Dell could give you some help, it says for portables, but it seems like it’s the same issue as the one you are having.

Thanks for the reply! It seems to be the joystick – when I plugged it into my MacBook, just to see what would happen, I got the same message about power surge. So perhaps the joystick has just crapped out? I just bought it in August… Reluctant to buy a whole new one in case the problem persists.

I also think you might be onto something with the heat. The fan kicks into high gear whenever I play MSFS – it’s super loud so clearly heat is an issue. So maybe I’m overheating things throughout the day? Not sure how to solve that issue, don’t know anything about cooling.

The article was helpful, thanks! None of the troubleshooting worked but I’ll keep it on hand anyway, will try again.

If you’re still lurking, let me know what you think. Time for a new joystick? Thanks!

Ok good! So it seems that we have ruled out your system, the heat issue I mentioned was only if it was affecting the USB power output, like as if the computer is throttling power management to USB when the computer gets warm. It is totally fine that your system’s fans run higher, my computer turns into a space heater. You have a smaller form factor system, so not a lot of room for larger fans, and smaller fans are usually louder than larger fans, so that’s fine. Just make sure that nothing is blocking any of the exhaust/intake areas on your computer, and make sure it’s not on carpet, blocking intake from the bottom if there is any.

The joystick that you have looks like a rebrand of a Logitech flight stick, I would suggest going with a “known” brand like logitech, thrustmaster, or saitek. The maker of your joystick may not have put the care and detail into the design leading to your issues. Yes, the name brands are a bit pricier, but unless the manufacturer of your joystick replaces it, you are out that money anyways, and you are spending the equivalent of a nice name brand stick. Also even if they do replace it, is it just going to do the same thing again? Do you want to deal with that again? I know I wouldn’t

I would look around in the peripherals section here or on the subreddit and see what other people are using for sticks. I have a Saitek Warthog HOTAS that I love, but I fly with an xbox controller a lot as I am lazy and don’t want to set up the HOTAS all the time (and I have a small desk).

Thanks for the great advice! I just ordered a Thrustmaster T1600. Skipped the HOTAS because I also have a small desk area :). So we’ll see how it goes! This was super useful info.
