Yeah, gaming desktop rigs generate some heat, and my office/“flight deck” room gets rather toasty when simming. (Though with Fall/Winter arriving here in the Northern Hemisphere, it’ll actually be beneficial, but I digress).
I’d like to be able to pipe some of the heat out of my office and into the hallway. Is there some sort of prepackaged PC ducting system on the market somewhere? I don’t know what terminology to search for.
Or else has someone here rigged up their own system to do this?
Instead of trying to attach any kind of flexible duct to your PC, my suggestion would be to get a small squirrel-cage fan and put it on the other side of the hallway blowing into the computer room. For the amount of air they put out, they’re pretty quiet. With the airflow coming through the door along the floor, it will bring in the coolest (low) air and push the warmer air out the top of the door.
I’ve found it’s better to blow air ON to the machine rather than try to suck out hot air. But that’s just my experience.
I currently have a rigged-up solution in that I have the side of the case off, and a 12" Patton floor fan at low rpm blowing ambient air into the case. It lowers my 4090’s temps by about 5C or so. It also makes the 4090 fans quieter, they’re not spinning as quickly.
I also once knew someone who piped in cold winter air from outside, thru a crude filter, and directly into his case. I’ve seen some real lash-up solutions over the years.
Have you looked at improving the efficiency of the computer to reduce the heat your PC produces. A cheap PSU will increase the overall heat your PC produces. You could also look into under-volting to reduce the wasted power that most PCs use up.
Most don’t realise that the hotter a PC gets; the more inefficient it becomes. Electric power conducts much better in cold materials than it does when they are hot. As atoms vibrate more as they heat up, this inhibits the travel paths of electrons. This in turn generates heat, which only compounds the problems even more.
I use a custom water cooling setup to move the heat into my encapsulated crawl space under the house. No added noise or heat in the computer room at all.
Whats cracken…Let me begin with the fact that my flight Sim is still fully intact…I just got 2024 downloaded from the Xbox store on my PC this afternoon so im just browsing various topics and digging in and quickly overwhelming myself lol…Im a commercial refrigeration tech by trade so naturally this topic caught my attention. What kind of heat exchangers are you using and is it air sourced or did you bury a small ground loop in your crawl space?
